Short Lingual Frenum (Tongue Tied)

posted 20th Feb '11
My son was born with Short Lingual Frenum. It's the lingual frenum on the tip of his tounge, when he sticks out his tounge it's in the shape of a heart. I never knew of this until he was born. The docs continue to tell me it's normal and they can't make a decision to cut it until he is older where they can determine if he has a speech problem. After research of my own, I realized that breastfeeding problems we had when he was a newborn could have been fixed! all this time I thought it was me! So now I dont want to wait till he has speech problems to THEN decide ok, lets cut it. If the problem can be avoided, I want to do it now! Anyone else have this problem or know someone who does, what was done? Any advice on what should I do? any advice or own personal experiences will be appreciated. Does anyone know someone who never got it cut and is perfectly normal? Thank You!

My 4.5 month old is tongue tied and I've got an appointment to have it clipped in the next month. I should've already had it done but we lost our insurance for a minute. Anyway, she's severely tongue tied, can't hardly stick her tongue out of her mouth so it most definitely would cause speech difficulties in the future.

I myself am tongue tied, not nearly as severe as she is, but I can't stick my tongue out very far. I never had it clipped, and have had no real issues with it.

my daughter was also born tongue tied and i made the decision to have it snipped when she was 3 days old because i already knew the problems it made with BFing. i could tell from the first time she latched that her suckle was not as strong as it should have been and i am the one who found it, not a nurse. she made my nipples bloody and blistered until it was snipped.

Same here, when breastfeeding, my son put me in so much pain, but i had no idea it was cause of his LF.

thank god my first child was not tongue tied so i was able to tell the difference and know that something was not right. if she had been my first i probably would have never known until i already quit BFing

Does anyone know if u can see a specialist about this? I'm not sure how severe is my sons. He can't stick his tounge out all the way and when he does, it looks like a heart. He hasn't really had speech problems yet, but I've noticed he has problems with words that begin with the letter L.

You go to an ENT (ear nose and throat) and it's something that they handle.

My dh is tongue tied. He never knew it untill I told him. He was a boobie baby, no latch problems, no speach problems either. But it bothers him he can't stick his tongue out very far.
I thought they clipped it when they were tiny. That is what I read.

I know this thread is over a year old, but you can still visit kiddsteeth.com. Dr. Kotlow is a pediatric dentist specializing in tongue tie and may be able to help.
