? regarding cereal in bottle for relux

My son's pedi has us putting cereal in his bottles for relux. He has been so much better since and I think his reflux is improving. He is almost at the age to start solids and I'm just curious how you went about this. Did you stop the cereal in the bottle and try spoon feeding them? Did you just skip spoon feeding cereal, continue to use it in the bottle, and start on baby food? I'm sure our pedi will give us the right advice when the time comes but I'm just curious what you did. I've tried to give him bottles with out cereal on a few occasions and while the spitting up is a lot better I don 't think he is quite ready to go without it.

i didn't remember to ask our pedi at his last visit, so here is what i did: i cut down the rice cereal in all his bottles by one third. that way he still get enough to keep him from vomiting. it was trial and error to find the right amount. then i did follow my pedi's advice on solid feeding. we feed him solids once a day, he gets 1 to 1.5 tablespoons oatmeal or barley cereal, and half a jar of fruits or veggies. and of course we worked up to those amounts. we are just kind of feeling him out, following his cues about how much he wants. so far he is doing great! good luck, and i can't wait to hear your pedi's advice. that way i will know if i am screwing up too bad, lol.

This is what I'm afraid of! It seems like he will never get better with this but when I think back to the way he used to be......wow, what a difference!

We have our 5 month appointment on the 26th so I guess we will see...that is if she wants to start him on solids. She said nothing last month about it so it might be 6 months untill we start. I cheated though and gave him some sweet potato on Christmas (I know, bad mommy!)

I continued putting cereal in his bottles and spoon feeding him too. We just recently switched from similac sensative RS to similac advanced I still add cereal to his bottles but its only 2 tsp per 5 ounces. Hes still on his prevacid once a day, but I can tell his reflux is getting much better. He gets 3 meals a day now plus his bottles.

oh my gosh he is scarred for life lol i did too !! but she was getting jars by then and they had a turkey sweet potato something or other and she had that for christmas!

mY SON HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND HE HAS CEREAL IN HIS BOTTLES TO BUT I HAVE SLOWLY STARTED PUTTING LESS IN HIS BOTTLE AND STARED DOING HAVE FORMULA HALF MILK HE ALSO IS NOW 11 MONTHS AND I JUST STARTED THAT AND HE SEEMS TO BE DOING FINE WITH THAT . hE IS ALSO EATING GERBER TODDLER ENTREES AND HE LOVES THEM WAY BETTER THEN BABY FOOD HE DIDNT EVEN EAT BABY FOOD I TRIED AND TRIED AND HE WOULD EAT IT SO I BOUGHT THE GERBER TODDLER THINGS SMASHED THEM UP A LITTLE AND HE ATE AWAY

My son has reflux also and we just started adding cereal to his bottle. I can't believe the difference. But originally my pedi had talked about spoon feeding at 4 months. I wonder what we will do now. What ever ended up happening with your situation? Just curious.

Well at my son's 5 month appointment the doctor said that we will skip spoon feeding cereal but will start on vegetables for now(fruits have to much acid). She said to continue with what we were doing so far and feed him at one feeding the vegetables and follow with a bottle.

I suggest putting it in a bowl now and getting him used to the spoon.

My daughter had it when she was a baby and I gave her cereal in her bottle til she was about 6 months old....for some reason the reflux got waaaay better and then went away completely after that month so I WAS SOOOO HAPPY! My 4 month old son has it too and I have to put it in his bottle....hes a bigger baby so i think that when i got this month for his apt the doc will have me start him on jar foods as well! Hopefully he does the same as my daughter and the reflux goes away after the 6th month!!!

how early did you start feeding your babies cereal in the bottle due to reflux. Just wondering I have the barfing problem with my daughter. She had an US today to check for pyloris stenosis she does not have that. Thank god. But the us doc said she probably has relfux. We have an appt tomorrow with her doc to see what is next.
she barfs , spits up every feeding. and burps I can see hurt her she get an aweful look on her face and cries after each one. and they are big one's. I have to give her formula but am now able to also bf her in the evenings again. She wasn't gaining her weight back. She is now back to 9.3 have to see what she is tomorrow. I hope back to her birth weight.

cinmommy2 - it took us almost 10 weeks to get the referal to the GI so we just started adding the cereal a week ago and he is also on previcid now. I hope you get it resolved tomorrow so you don't have to live like that as long as we did. They may have you try the enfamil AR first, but it seems to cause constipation or not be thick enough. If that ends up being the case then they will probably have you add cereal to a different formula like the gentle ease or nutramagen. Update us for sure. I added you to my parentank also. At my son's 2 month apointment, the dr. gave the diagnosis of reflux so we started zantax. I would say at about 2 and half months we started the cereal. I wanted to try to wait it out a little longer but he would spit up so much and so often that it just seemed to be the next step. Now at 5 months he is doing better. He has good days and bad ones even with meds and cereal.
