Yay, Liriel Danica-Jean Lane has arrived! She was born at 7:43AM on Friday, January 11,
weighing in at 6lbs 5.1oz, 19 inches long. It was a crazy night. She was 4 days early,
with a due date of 1/15.
I was having contractions that were 10-12 minutes apart all afternoon into the evening of
1/10, nothing too too painful to think I was in real labor. Then at about 1 AM they went
from 12 min right down to every 2 min.....the worst pain in my life ever. Chris and I got
to the hospital at 1:30AM, they checked me right away, I was at 6cm. (Chris: I didn't
believe she was in labor at first since we had made several trips to triage in the past 2
weeks and were sent home each time with Jamie just being in prodromal(sp?) labor staying
at 3 cm for several weeks. When her contractions suddenly jumped to 2 mins apart it was
very different than her previous pains though as she was screaming extremely loudly
during each one and needed me there to press down hard on her lower back during them. I
was trying to get her to wait them out a little more to be sure, but she was in so much
pain that we left right away. I was really amazed when we arrived and they checked her at
6cm...I couldn't believe not only that baby was actually coming, but also that Jamie
labored that much on her own at home.)
They rushed me to a labor/delivery room and all of my contractions were on top of one
another, maybe 20 seconds in between. They checked me right away and I was at 8cm. I
screamed for an epidural, I got a resident who did it. She took 7 tries, really 14, a
shot of numbing agent then the 3 inch needle for the epi in my spine. It sucked....she
sucked. The head dr. got in there and did it in one try, so 16 shots to my back (still
hurts to move my back or lay down, bump it..etc). They checked me again at 2ish and I was
10cm, with an epi covering only 2/3 my body.
(Chris: Jamie definitely was someone else during most of this time, and what I learned in
class came in most handy during this period. She wasn't able to answer a lot of the
questions they were asking her about her medications and health history, so I had to
relay that....over and over and over to each person that came in, that was a bit
annoying. When she called for the epidural they came very quickly, but like Jamie said,
the resident who was first trying really was horrible and shouldn't have made so many
unsuccessful attempts at it. They had me sit on a stool in front of her with her feet on
my knees to align her back straight while they prepared the shot behind her. With her
going through the 8-10 transitional contractions while trying to sit up and get the epi,
I could tell she was in extreme pain during it and had to work hard to make her focus on
me breathing to keep her as calm as possible and breathing. It was relieving when the
head Dr. finally came in to succssfully insert the epi...10 min, after Jamie was so much
more calm and in less pain and back to a more resonable self
I was stunned when they
checked her just shortly after receiving the epidural to hear she was fully dialated at
10 cm.)
At this point, my water still had not broken. They broke it at 2:15...weird. I decided
not to push yet and let the baby desend on her own, this lessened pushing time. I started
pushing at 4:45 and continued till 6:30, but the baby wasn't desending at all and her
heart rate was getting high and staying high, so they said I needed a c-section, so I
said ok...just wanna be done with a healthy baby. I was still in pain, since no full epi.
I kept pushing as we went down the hall to the OR. Chris wasn't allowed to come in, till
I was prepped. (Chris: We didn't particularly want to have her water broken, but since
she sat at 10cm for a little while and it still hadn't, we agreed with the doctors that
it was probably best to do it to get the labor progressing. The nurse instructed me how
to hold one of her legs back while she held the other and count 10 counts for pushing,
either 2 or 3 times, when each contraction came. Baby had been at +1 descending since
they initially checked when she was at 10 cm, and several residents kept checking and
seemed to become worried as progress wasn't made over the hour. It seemed to me like they
finally went to retrieve a more head doctor to examine the situation, then they all had a
discussion with him after he examined and the verdict seemed like some intervention was
necessary. The residents then came back to explain to us that baby's heart rate was
tatacartic (sp?) (fluctuating high and low a lot) and with her not descending with the
hour of pushing, a C-section would be highly likely and that they wanted to rush Jamie
over to the operating room. It was a hectic rush with the nurses hurrying her bed over
to the OR, during which he epidural got ripped out when it got snagged on the way,
complicating things more. When they took her into the OR I had to wait 10-15 min there
while she was prepped. This was horrible not knowing what was going on and was the
longest period of the whole night for me. There was a nice rocking chair, but it really
didn't help with me freaking out and wanting to be in there with Jamie. After about 15
min. a nurse came out with a "bunny suit" for me, and I was able to get all the
protection on and enter the room.)
As I was prepped, I kept pushing...screaming for Chris...I felt the baby coming down now.
Chris finally got in and they still can't get the epi to work 100%...they started to
inject my vagina with meds (ouch! I could feel it). The babys heart rate got worse, they
also noticed meconium. At this point, at least 20 people in the room-3 anesthesiologists,
4-5 doctors, various residents, nurses and multiple pediatric specialists. No clue what
is going on at this point, I hurt, I am still pushing (can't stop) and all the worried,
frantic commotion...I tune it all out, focusing on pushing. (Chris: It was pretty crazy
in the OR room. The first thing I noticed were the tons of people everywhere. There was
the anethetic crew working on repairing her epidural that ripped out, a few nurses I
recognized that had been helping us all along, most of the residents...4-5, who had been
checking in on her, 2 doctors, and others and talking and rushing about. They gave Jamie
and oxygen mask, and I made it my focus to keep her breathing and pushing with the
contractions. She wasn't making progress at first and I heard tidings of possibly
starting up the C-section prep, but also possibly trying a vaccum. I guess the next few
pushes after that the baby did come down a bit more so they changed their minds to try
and assist for forceps, so they numbed her up and I saw them getting them in to assist. I
was pretty worried about everything at this point and again was just focusing on keeping
Jamie breathing and pushing through the contractions and finally at one point saw this
head with a full head of hair crowning. That was really exciting knowing we were close to
seeing our little girl and I just kept telling Jamie we were almost there and to keep
pushing her hardest to get her out. When baby finally came out, the cord was around her
neck and they immediately detangled her and took her over to clear the meconium and
fluids from her throat. It was worrysome to not hear her cry right away...it seemed to
take forever before she did, but everything seemed to be ok and everyone that was
checking her after said she looked good. I tried to go over to check on Jamie, but she
kept telling me to stay with the baby, so I did. The doctor's explained to me that they
didn't want her to cry right away until they drained her and that they didn't want to
worry us, but was trying to take care of her quick. They were all really nice, and let me
watch as they examined her while Jamie delievered her placenta and was stiched up. She
had 2nd degree ripping I guess...not sure how many stiches she actually recieved, but we
were told it was like a hem, so it had to be a decent amount.)
Somewhere in this time frame, they see the baby crowning or something and decided they
need her out faster than putting me completely asleep for a c-section, they use forceps
and pull her out. Turns out, she also had a tight cord around her neck. Chris was trying
to keep me calm through it all, but let me tell you, I don't remember any of that.
They told me to open my eyes and see the baby...she had her eyes open and I could see
lots of hair. She wasn't crying though and they rushed her to the other side of the room
to work on her. Turns out, they needed to suction her because of the meconium and they
had to stabalize her heart rate. It felt like forver till she cried, I kept asking if she
was ok and everyone in the room was quiet. Then she cried and everything was stable, so I
got to hold her on our way back to our room. She roomed in with Chris and I the entire
time.
The following day we were to be discharged, but due to swelling, I was unable to urinate.
We had to stay an extra night, so I could have a catheter until my bladder was
functional. We then got to come home on Sunday night.
Right now, we are all doing well. Liriel is adjusting and we are all happy to be out of
the hospital.
(Chris: I'll never sleep again....)
Crazy no?
