Hospital Tour Questions

posted 9th Feb '11
With my first child I went into premature labour at 31 weeks and I never had a chance to do the hospital tour thing. Plus he was born at a different hospital than where I was supposed to deliver him anyway. So this time, I'm going to a hospital I've never been to before, and I won't be in an OR like I was with my first. They also took him straight to the NICU. This time I'm already full term so I'm going to be in a birthing suite. Which sounds pretty cool. So I'm trying to come up with some questions to ask on my hospital tour. So far I have:

-Can my toddler visit the baby after he's born?
-Can my husband stay with me overnight?
-Will the baby be in my room over night or do they put baby in a nursery?

If you can come up with any other questions I should ask I'd appreciate it!

I went for my hospital tour sunday.. and the baby will be with you all day and night except for 2 hours I think.. They have little check ups.
Yes your husband can stay you with you over night..
Idk about the other one.

You can ask about the post-partum room. How big it is, if there would be a place for you SO to sleep, if it is private or shared, if there's a bathroom with a shower in it.
You can ask what kind of toiletries and baby items they provide, so you know if you need to bring extra things for yourself or your newborn.

full term is considered 40 weeks, it says youre due in march, its feb.

uhm, usually visitors are allowed as soon as youre ready for them, my husband stayed the night at the hospital and my baby never left my room.

I know full term is 40 weeks, but my OB told me that I am no longer considered high risk and my baby would not be considered "premature" if he were born now at 36 weeks. So I am going by what she said. And yes I am asking if my baby gets to stay with me because my first child was taken as soon as he was born and had to stay in the NICU for two months.. So I really have no clue what it's like with a "normal" birth experience.   I am just trying to get an idea. Thanks for all the questions and answers everyone

your baby should be able to stay with you as long as he or she is okay.

So I meant term, not full term. Sorry about that, I'm just so excited that I'll be in a birthing suite instead of an OR that I'm confusing words. My last birth experience was less than ideal, so I'm hoping this one will be much better.

Your Ob is right... you wouldn't be considered term until 37 weeks and full term 40+ weeks

Hmm odd, I saw her today and she said I was already at the point where I don't have to give birth in an OR. She checked that I was 36 weeks. Either way it doesn't matter, cervix is still closed Next week I'll be 37. I'm just wondering what it's like giving birth in a normal birthing suite.

EVERY hospital is different.
For example, with my daughter, the hospital I delivered in only allowed 2 people in the delivery room at any given time, and visitors had to leave by 7 pm.
With the hospital I had my son in, he had to go straight to the NICU, and neither he or I were allowed any visitors until the next day. However, they did let me have as many people as I wanted with me in the delivery room while I was in labor, then they let 3 people stay for the actual birth.
