Women who have given birth twice...w/ AND w/o pitocin
posted 12th Jan '08
Ok, this is basically targeted towards women who have at least 2 children and have had one birth using pitocin and the other one w/out.
With DD, I went to the hospital and was dialated 4 cm, and 90% effaced...Wasn't having any pain, however my water had a slow leak...They were really busy and almost sent me home, but since my water was leaking, they hooked me straight up to pitocin, an hour later I was 5 cm, still no pain. Then they broke my water, and all hell broke lose. Worst pain of my life, and I didn't have time for an epidural. The contractions were so close, like one right after the other and extremly painful. I literally went from 5 cm to 10 cm in less than 20 minutes, and pushed for 5 minutes, and she was out. I ended up hemorraging (sp?) but they were able to control in eventually. She came so quick, that she tore me from front to back and as she didn't have time to transition, she had a difficult time breathing at first, b/c there was some fluid in her lungs. (She is a completly healthy almost 4 year old now)
Now, I've been reading all this stuff about pitocin causing more painful deliveries and causing people to hemorrage (wondering if this is why I did). I really just want this labor to be smooth(-er), not rushed, or as painful. I really felt like I had no control.
What was your personal experience? Did you prefer the delivery w/ pitocin or w/out?

I have not had my second yet, but I had to have pitocin with my first. My dr did tell me that contractions and labor w/ pitocin tend to be more intense because the meds cause them to come much faster than your body would normally allow. I REALLY hope I don't have to have it again!

It was equal to me...but it was natural both times. With my first, I was only in labor for two hours, and had no time for an epidural by the time I went to the hospital, which was not the plan, but I don't regret it now.
With my second, I went into pre-term labor at 28 weeks, but was put on meds to stop it, and kept on it until I was 35 weeks, then it started again, and they stopped it again...well, I kept having contractions for that last month that were close together, like 2-4 minutes for a day or more at a time, but they weren't dilating my cervix very much, so they ended up inducing me at 38 weeks 6 days. Since I had a history of rapid labor, they were afraid I wouldn't make it to the hospital. But the pain was equal, and the contractions didn't feel any different than the one's I'd been feeling for the last month of my pregnancy, until it was time to push of course, ouch.

I wasn't progressing (my labor was about 26 hours total) So I had it. Iwas so drugged up and exhausted that I didn't feel anything with the pitocin. My boss said with all three of her children she refused it because of the effects it can have on the baby and yourself.
I'm really worried about going into spontanious(sp?) labor since I may not have someone to watch my son. My SIL works until 9pm and is about 45 mins away. I'm so tempted to be induced but, I don't want it to be done with pitocin. maybe just strip my membranes. I know that can still take weeks but, I just ahve no idea what I'm going to do with him If I go into labor at the wrong time.

I had both of my children by induction and I also was told that it is way more painful. With my second child, I also dialated from five to ten very quickly. It was about ten minutes.I wanted an epidural but I didn't have time to get it.She also came out sunnyside up. VERY painful!!!I'm going to do everything in my power to go into labor naturally this time.
