How long is too long....

posted 10th Jan '08
for my almost 6 week old son to be sleeping at night? We go to bed between 10:30 - 11:30 each night (depends on when he feeds last) and for the last 4 days, he doesn't wake up again unil about 6-7 hours later. Granted he's been eating every 1.5-2.5 hours during the day, but it still seems like he's sleeping a lot! And he's exclusively breastfed too so my boobs wake up FULL of milk!!

depends on the baby and night and week.

its normal, my little one did that then she stopped doing that and then she did it again..

they go through cycles

I know how you feel being full of milk. I feel like a cow lol.

My pedi told me that you shouldn't let them sleep that long. They will lose weight. I know it seems horrible, but it's better to wake a baby and feed and change them then to let them sleep through the night at such a young age.

see I never woke the baby up. When she slept it was a blessing . She knew when she wanted food. And she never lost weight. But it all depends on the baby. kudos for getting up to wake the baby lol.   I couldn't do that.

Our ped told me not to wake him at night anymore because he gained his birth weight back. But I have to call him today anyways, so I'll ask him then...

How much much is he eating when he wakes up? My son did the same thing, but when he would wake up he would eat like a pig! I wasn't able to breastfeed for too long, but while I was and he did this I would pump, store the milk, and use it at a later time. I know the doctors say not to let them sleep, but my son never lost any weight or had any problems gaining weight. He isn't going to let himself go hungry, so if he does get hungry he will wake up.

My pedi [and all of the baby books i have read] said that by 6 weeks they are able to sleep through the night. So, I never woke my daughter up at that point.. She knew when she was hungry.

What do you think of as sleeping through the night? 6-8 hours? 4-6 hours?

The CNN article says don't let a newborn less than 2 weeks old sleep through the night...My son is almost 6 weeks....

Right, I just figured it would be good to read.....It stressed the same points that my pedi said. Too long could dehydrate them, etc. But, if he seems okay when he wakes and you're not worried, get some good sleep momma!

Just talk to your pedi and see what they suggest.
