Taking tramadol during pregnancy?

posted 7th Jan '08
Has anyone taken tramadol (ultram) during pregnancy? I took it several times recently because my mother said it was safe (she used to be a nurse)but I decided to research it anyways and found a few sites saying it can cause serious problems with the fetus! Now I'm very worried I have harmed my poor little baby! I wasn't takling it in excess but only about 2 times a week for the past 2 months.

it's for mild to severe pain relief. I was taking it for my scoliosis and sciatic pain.

No harm to the fetus due to tramadol was seen at doses that were not maternally toxic. Tramadol is a Class C drug that should not be taken during pregnancy,,,according to my doctor. I was on three class C drugs and have to go off. But, some of the research I have done does not suggest that you would do harm by taking Tramadol a couple of times but I really would contact your doctor to make sure. Good luck

This is something you really need to ask your doctor. Good luck with this.

i don't know about tramadol, but many class C drugs are still given. Review the reports that have been done on animals and see if there are any reports in human birth problems.
I have the option of going back on Lexapro while pregnant which is a class C, that caused minor decreases in birthweight in rats, but not enough women who were pregnant and taking the drug have been sampled to show conclusive reports, but of the reported findings no changes were found in human babies.

and I am on a class C anitbiotic now... Biaxin.
Class C again... I'm on it for a resp. infection that came on during a nasty virus that made so much extra mucus.
It was perscribed to me by my OBGYN (as my regular doctors office refuses to treat me unless the OB says they can't since I'm pregnant) and he said, "This is a major antibiotic, but you are in your second trimester now, and its safe for me to perscribe it to you now. Major complications can happen from an infection anywhere, so we need to knock it out FAST. The risks are far higher from infection than from the drug."

So just because it is class C doesn't mean it WON'T be used for women who are pregnant, it just means that if there are better options with more conclusive reports in humans, then they should be explored first.

You need to talk to you doctor though before making any decisions. Tramadol can be serious stuff. It was perscribed to me for migranes once, and it turned out to lower the seizure threshold in people with seizure disorders.
I flopped and foamed for like a week before we found out it was being caused by the medicine that I was given to help keep me from the seizures in the first place.

I was on Tegretol, a class-C drug, for Epilepsy and as it turns out, it causes Spina Bifida.....and since I was also on Lamictal for Bi-Polarism/ADD, which is also used for Epilepsy, my doctor just immediately took me off the Tegretol (Carbamazapine). BUT, I had to lower my dosage from 150 mg of Lamictal to 40 to reduce the chances of birth defects (it can also potentially cause Spina Bifida, although Tegretol is MUCH worse). I was on a class-D drug years ago and thought I was pregnant....good thing I wasn't..

I was on lamictal and keppra.
Lamictal does have those problems and a heightened risk of cleft palatte and club foot.... However, Keppra is a class C and does not have any reported problems in humans, but in lab rats it resulted in heart problems...
Doctors can assess what you need and decide if the risks outweigh the benifits...
for me, I don't take any of my anticonvulsants anymore... but should I have another seizure I will surely be put back on something.
I only wanted to point out that just because something is a class C drug, doesn't necessarily mean that her doctor would tell her "no", just that she NEEDS to talk to her doctor and have THEM make that decision and explain the risks and beneifits to her.
I just saw so many people saying things that implied "its a class C, you can't have it" That may not be necessairly true... She doesn't know until she talks to her doctor and reads those reports.

BTW, I started getting those reports when I saw a genetics counselor for medicine exposure.... so thats how I know about what they may say. She'll ened to talk to her doctor when she reads them though, they can often times require additional translation since they are not really written for the general public.

Ok, I'm losing my mind.....you're right, Lamictal mainly only has a chance of causing cleft lip/pallette and ultrasounds have shown that our son is fine.

And you're right, not all class-C meds will necessarily cause birth defects - but it's something that should be assessed on all planned pregnancy prior to conceiving and if becomming pregnant just "happened" and was not planned, really should be assessed right away. In many cases, lowering your dosage on meds might be all future mothers ever need.

I don't see my doc again until the 21st but I plan on talking to him about it then. Only problem is that he's an adventist and doesn't believe pregnant women should take ANY medication whatsoever. He wouldn't even give me phenergan for my morning sickness even though I lost about 15 lbs my first 4 months because I couldn't keep any food down at all. He told me not to even take any Tylenol! He wants me on NO meds at all during my pregnancy. He told me to just 'tough it out', that pregnant women had been having babies for centuries without any meds! I had been taking the tramadol I was on before the pregnancy because I had to get some kind of relief with my scoliosis and Tylenol wasn't working. I don't fully trust everything my doc says to be absolute fact. He's almost 70 and likes to do things the old fashioned way I suppose. So I guess I'm just going to "tough it out" as he says...lol But thanks everyone for all your help!

Sounds like you need to go find a new doctor. There is no point in going to a doctor you don't believe in.
