Vitamin D supplementation??

My baby is an exclusively breast fed, happy little 5 week old. His doctor recommended that we supplement him with Vitamin D (400 IU/day) because apparently breast milk is deficient in it. Now, I gave it to him for about 4-5 days and during these 4-5 days, he was SUPER fussy in the evening (as I imagine a colicky baby would be). I've since stopped giving it to him and he's been his happy normal self. I doctor recommended this stuff called "Just D."
Is anyone else supplementing? Anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? My husband says we should give it to him because the doctor ordered is, but I really don't feel like he needs it, esp. because he gets so FUSSY! Also - it's interesting that AAP recommends it, but LLL doesn't. And here I thought breastmilk was perfect...Apparently it's not...

I haven't given it to any of my kids. The lactation consultant I worked with in WA (where I had my first two) said that if I took them with me when I walked out to the mailbox they'd get some vitamind D from the sunshine and be just fine. So, we took that route...exposed them to some sun every day (even in WA!!) and they seem to be doing fine!
FYI (for your husband)...I know it's tempting to believe everything doctors say and not question it...but question it! Doctors are human and biased, just like the rest of us! I've found that they all have an issue or two that they push and don't even mention things that another doctor is certain to bring up at every appointment! Do your own research and keep that and doctor's recommendations in mind when deciding how to parent your children...the ultimate decisions are yours. Good luck!

My son's ped had him on vitamin drops. I mentioned it to a lactation consultant and she told me that they're not neccessary. Everything the baby needs is in the breast milk. Plus those things stained everything brown, he would spit up a whole feeding

I'm not using them the doctor suggested it, but said I could just put him in the sun for a few minutes each day, I was doing great with that but now its so overcast. I think breast milk has everything they need... I wouldnt give my son something that made him fussy, My sister never gave any of her 4 kids the supplement either.

We got told the same thing, and I gave it to William for a while, but it got to be more of a hassle than taking him out in the sun for a few minutes every day... SoI just stick with the sunlight, and he's just fine.
