Does abortion lead to miscarriage when you try having childr

posted 4th Jan
Hi everyone,
I posted another topic a few days ago regarding morning sickness. That will no longer be an issue.
On Dec. 29th I found out I was pregnant but today while I was at work, I ended up going home then to the ER. I had another miscarriage! I had one before this about 6 months ago.
A year before those 2 pregnancy's I had an abortion -
my bf and i were just starting to date then, ( but he didnt know anything about the abortion)but now its been almost 2 yrs we been together, we are actually trying to have a baby now.
Did the abortion mess me up? My bf has no idea I had an abortion the 1st time we got pregnant, he thinks I lost it.
Im starting to think we wont be able to have kids until I tell him the truth or that the abortion procedure reallymessed me up.

Having an abortion can sometimes lead to fertility problems, though it is rare. I would definitely go see a doctor about it, just to make to see if maybe the abortion caused some scarring or something like that.

I would tell your bf the truth. Thats a pretty huge secret, and I would feel extremely guilty. But thats your judgement, I don't know how your bf feels about that type of stuff.

I have heard stories about abortions leading to miscarriages and even infertility, but that's usually not the case nowadays. How old are you? I know when you're younger you have a lot higher chance of miscarrying.

From the information that I have read, the studies that conclude that abortion could be a link to future fertility problems leave out the fact that sexually transmitted diseases are more common in women with unintended pregnancies (and thus, abortions) and it is the STD that causes the fertility problem, not the abortion itself. Also, first trimester abortions seem to have no effect on future fertility.

Here's a link, you may feel better after reading:

It is pretty rare that an abortion would lead to infertility now. In the past it was a lot more common. You could mention it to your doctor and they can check for scar tissue and things to rule out that possibility.

It can happen yes.. although I've heard it not so much increases the risk of miscarriage as it does tubal pregnancies.

Unneccessary, really.

Also, to OP, you may just have a fertility problem in general that has nothing to do with the abortion. Who know if you would have had a viable first pregnancy if you chose not to have the abortion. How long have you and your bf been trying? A lot of doctor's won't test you for fertility problems unless it's been at least a year of trying. However, if you have a history of miscarriages, the doctor may be willing to start testing now.

And, how long after the first miscarriage did you have the second? If you don't give your body enough time to heal, it can increase your chances of another miscarriage.

see? but, you didn't keep your mouth shut. and now you look like a self righteous, sack of shit. who knows? maybe this is your karma, to be an ice-boxed, first stone casting, glass house dwelling threat to women's rights. in a million years i will never understand a woman who poo-poos abortion when there is a clearly desperate need for safe and legal abortion. but, you're young and perhaps you just don't have any idea what our sex has endured to get to the point (however precarious because of people like you) that we are now. thank god that you can't vote yet. you might want to read, "our bodies ourselves" before you make your first trip to the polls too. you'd be surprised at how hard women have had to fight for a lot of things.
ohhhh but, i'm gonna keep my mouth shut on this one.
(after saying some really mean shit to you but, you know? just gonna keep to my self here. please...)

to the OP:
i hope that your abortion was done well in a medical setting. there is always a risk of fertility problems but, that risk is very low. good luck in the future and please, don't ever let anyone make you feel bad about your decision.

It could lead to issues, but unlikely especially if you went to a hospital or liscensed facility to have the abortion performed. An abortion in a sense is like having a D&C performed, your uterus gets scraped to remove all excess tissue that could be remaining from the embryo. Sometimes it takes a little while for the uterine lining to build back up, but if this abortion was two years ago I am pretty sure that it has nothing to do with it.

did you have any complications afterwards? If no, and the abortionist did everything correctly then it might just be misfortune that you are having repeat miscarriages. I would speak with your OB/GYN about this and see if there is anything that you can do to help strengthen the uterine lining. Miscarriages are actually quite common and there are women on this site that have had several but still went on to have a perfectlty healthy baby.

I am deeply sorry for your losses and do hope that your next beanie is a sticky one!!

I know everyone says its unlikely, and I dont know the statistics, it could very well be for different reasons, but it does seem like a good amount of women who have had a previous abortion have had trouble trying to conceive later.
Sorry for your lost ones. GL in the future.

Just because I personally know a few women who have had abortions and all had trouble with miscarages later on, plus I have seen quite a few women on here that have had the same trouble. Like I said it could be from something else all together. I know quite a few people who have miscarried and have never had an abortion also, so who knows.
