Finding Funding for Your Abortion

We all know abortion is a difficult decision with various things to take into consideration. However, the ability to pay for an abortion should never be a deciding factor.

One in four women will be forced to carry out a pregnancy that she does not want due to simply not being able to afford the cost. Most keep the children rather than choose adoption. Many women are also forced to prolong the abortion until they are further along allowing more time to find money yet costing more.

The federal government prevents federal money to be used to pay for an abortion. However, there are numerous groups and agencies that will help. Some will pay for the procedure, some will pay for travel and lodging and some will help with everything.

32 states will allow Medicaid funding in cases of rape, incest or the mother‘s life is in danger.

These states will allow Medicaid funding, however you must be a resident of the state and have the procedure done in the same state. There may be other restrictions, contact you state. You can call 211 for social services in any state.

Most insurance companies cover at least some of the cost of first trimester surgical abortion procedures. You can call your insurance company and ask if they cover abortion services. Then call your chosen provider or the Pro-Choice Hotline (1-800-ABORTION) to see where your insurance is accepted. Certain state assistance programs will cover the procedure, but this varies state to state.
In most states, Medicaid will pay for your abortion if your pregnancy is the result of rape or incest or if your life would be endangered if you did not have an abortion. There are some states where abortion is covered in most elective cases.

States where Medicaid will pay for abortions under most circumstances are:
Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia.

Here is a state by state list. You should look at the state in which you are a resident of AND/OR the state that you will be going to for the procedure. Some funds will pay for out of state residents as long as the abortion is done in state.

Alaska
Pauline's Abortion Loan Fund
This Fund is a program of the Alliance for Reproductive Justice. If you are having an abortion in Alaska or if you're an Alaska resident traveling out of state for an abortion, Pauline's Abortion Loan Fund can help with a no-interest loan. They can also help pay for lodging, food costs, and transportation related to your abortion. Community Abortion Information and Resources Project (CAIR Project)

Arizona
It's Your Choice: The Abortion Fund
Ask your clinic or doctor's office to call this Fund about help paying for your abortion. This Fund helps women having their procedures in Arizona, and can also help pay for emergency contraception, and transportation, lodging, childcare, and food costs related to your abortion appointment.

California
Women’s Health Rights Coalition (ACCESS)
ACCESS provides free, confidential and nonjudgmental information, referrals, peer counseling and advocacy to women seeking abortion, and can help with paying for abortion care, lodging, meals, transportation and ultrasounds for women living in California. ACCESS also has volunteers that may be able to help to provide rides, overnight housing, childcare, translation or other assistance.

Freedom Fund (Colorado)
If you are having your abortion in Denver metro area, you may be able to get help from the Freedom Fund. Ask your provider if they have Freedom Fund grants to assist in paying for your abortion. You can also email the Freedom Fund at thefreedomfund@gmail.com. They will respond within 48 hours. Please include information on when your procedure is scheduled, the amount you need, and who the provider is. The Freedom Fund will be billed directly by the clinic for any help they can give you.

District Of Columbia
DC Abortion Fund

If you are a resident of Washington DC, Maryland, or Virginia and you are at least 9 weeks pregnant, you may get help from the DC Abortion Fund. They may also be able to help you if you are traveling to the DC area for your abortion.
Call the DC Abortion Fund and leave a message slowly stating your name, your full phone number including area code, and the number of weeks you are pregnant. Someone from the Fund will call you back within 48 hours. They will use a blocked number, so make sure that your phone will accept blocked and unknown numbers.

Delaware
Delaware Pro-Choice Medical Fund
If you live in Delaware or are traveling there for an abortion, you may be able to get help from the Delaware Pro-Choice Medical Fund. The Fund can also sometimes help women in nearby areas of PA, NJ and MD. Ask your clinic to contact the Delaware Pro-Choice Medical Fund directly when you call them to make your appointment.

Florida

The Fund is administered by Planned Parenthood of North Florida, but if you live in North Florida you can call the Fund for help no matter where you are getting your abortion. If you live in Central Florida and need help paying for an abortion, you may get help from the Central Florida Women's Emergency Fund. The Fund can help you if you are going to one to the following clinics:

This Fund works directly with clinics. When you arrive at your clinic, tell them that you will need a place to sleep for the night between your appointments. The clinic will contact a Haven Coalition volunteer to pick you up from the clinic and take you to her home for the night. The volunteer will also help you figure out how to get back to the clinic the next morning.
