re: BREASTFEEDING!!!!

posted 8th Sep
so, i am in a class called developmental psychology. I am having a ball!!! Last weeks discussion forum was about infant mortality, and i kicked some major class ass when i suggested more parents breastfeed to help reduce the risk of infant mortality(we had to make a suggestion on how to reduce it, so bfign was mine). I had a lot of people agree and even got onto the subject of NIP being unaccepted in the u.s. but then one lady ad the nerve to give me a list of reasons some parents shouldnt bf, and i smoked her with quotes, websites and proof disproving everything she said!!! YAY FOR ME!!! i was congratulated on my research! She was saying if you smoke and drink you cant bf, if you have less than perfect nutrition you cant bf. I think she is just jealous that she didnt bf, her son is 4 and she pumped for a month for him, but never put him on the breast. so i think she just envies the people who do it   sorry i just had to share!!! THIS WEEK... we are doing self-soothing(CIO basically) and co-sleeping!!! lets just say i already haveposted in the discussion and it was posted last night as i slept haha   i woke up and waslike jumping out of mypants!!! haha. it is so nice being in a class where i have SOOO much knowledge on somethign for once! It will probably slow down as we get out of th infant stage, but for now i am hyped about it

that's wondeful! I love educating people (and being educated). Hopefully everyone in your class, including this woman, talk about the online discussion with people they know and the word will get out even more. Well done!

yeah a lot of the girls in there dont have kids yet, so hopefully now they will make better parentign choices just from this class. a lot of gals in there have said that they already learned a lot from us tht already have kids. I said in one of my quotes that i think NIP is good because younger people need to see that it isnt so bad to do, and eventually one day it will be socially acceptable like in other countries.

I have a preemie baby and so he can't latch well so I've been using nipple guards. I keep getting extremely discouraged because I feel like my milk supply is thinning out... are there any suggestions to pick it back up...? I've been pumping, but I don't feel like it is working. I've also heard that nipple guards can reduce your milk supply, is this true? And if so, what can I do about it?

i am going to school for early childhood edu, so i guess i want to teach preschool maybe. my dream job would be to teach at a private school before lylian starts school so that she can go there haha   i dont know when i will be done with school though. i didnt get to take as many credit hours this semster as i wanted to, but ooh well, i have a lot going on as it is, so these classes are good enough for now   it's kind of hard doing them online and independent study, so i dont want to get in over my head. I took 3 classed last winter but i went to the class, so it was much easier for me because i could stay there and get work done if i needed, but it's had to do a class at home. i am basically just trying to get my associates and go from there. I might do university of phoenix after i get done at the community college. thats what sam and my mom do, and they like it so far. I will definitly be asking you guys for advise if i need resources or some info that i can whammy them with!!!

Yay for leaving everyone else behind, playing in the dirt going "huh". haha

I love when my knowledge is put to use. You never know when you'll be able to use that little piece of knowledge to your advantage.

I'm full of all kinds of facts, just rambling around in my head.

i dont think using nipple shields would decrease your supply, but your body ust might not pick up on growing cues and such. but i think it would pick it up better than with pumping because the baby is still kind of like suckign on the breast. I would just keep trying to latch him on the breast, eventually he will probably catch on   congrats to you for sticking with bfing, i assume it would be difficult bfing a preemie. good luck, it sounds like you are doing fine, just keep at it hun. it should get easier eventually

What makes you feel like your supply is thinning out?

Nipple shields will not reduce your supply they used to think it would, but have proved otherwise.

*During a growth spurt it is normal for the baby to CONSTANTLY be at the breast, and once your supply regulates, it is also normal to not feel full anymore, although this is Not an indication of low supply. If you are feeding on demand, and not supplementing, it is rare that your supply would decrease lower than your baby's needs. Most people have a problem once they go back to work, or supplement or start pumping vs feeding.
