So my baby's 11 days old now and milking me like a mad woman! Well at least that's what it feels like to me. She nurses every 2-3 hours and each time she nurses for at least 30-40 mins, even 50 mins. And sometimes that's not even enough. I can tell she's pretty aggressive at sucking too and I'm producing enough milk. She even chokes on the milk once in a while and get it all over her face before she unlatches. Is that too much? The pediatrician said she's gaining weight especially well and I shouldn't nurse more than 30 mins at a time. If giving her pumped milk then no more than 2 oz. But if I don't let her nurse for more than 30 mins or give at least 3-4 oz, Ella really lets me hear it. What should I do?

Keep feeding your baby girl as much as she needs!! To limit her is ridicilous!

As a mother it's hard to take it away from her, especially considering how hard she cries when she wants to eat. But I keep on hearing/reading 15-20 mins on each breast when she's a newborn (even the pediatrician), and she does way more than that. I just want to do the right thing for her.

I say don't worry about what you read or what the pedi says. My daughter was like that but she nurses every hour and a half for 45 minutes. She still nurses more than what books say. She's my daughter so no way am I going to restrict her from what she wants.

babies are born with a knowledge of when they are full.  They stop when they are full.  Don't force her to eat when not hungry and don't withhold when she is!  You're doing great mama!  Lydia nurses that much and she's not obese or anything!  SHe's a healthy 18 lb 8 month old.  Well she was 18 pounds at 7 months so she's probably more!

Hi, Im Christina. I have been breastfeeding my daughter for 6wks now...My breasts are so sore and I feel like I have tried everything. I switch positions etc. Its getting to a point where I feel like I have to gear myself up to feed her its so PAINFUL! I talked to my ob at my six wk checkup and she said my breasts looked fine. I dont know what to do. Sometimes during the day it goes fine. Painful when I latch her and 10secs later it feels comfortable. But then at night it gets worse like around 7-8ish. She will latch on and unlatch. She's fussy. And my poor boobs take a beating and I just feel like giving up. I dont know what to do. Im also trying to wait for this bf pillow to arrive and hopefully that'll take away the constant headache of getting the pillows together and in a certain spot...ugh...Any pointers you can give me ladies???

Has anyone looked at your latch? If she's not getting enough of your breast into her mouth that could be part of the painful part and it wouldn't necessarily leave anything for the ob to identify as a problem. Also if her lips are positioned properly it can hurt too. My 8 month old likes to tuck his upper lip under and that doesn't feel good for me.

Here are some GREAT videos to help with latching techniques http://www.thebirthden.com/Newman.html

You're doing a wonderful job. I know what it's like to have to "gear up" as you said for breastfeeding, but try to pinpoint what she's doing or not doing and it'll get easier. Do you have access to a lactation consultant or have you looked into La Leche League? Sometimes having someone to be there with you and help baby get a good latch can makea world of difference. You can look up local LLL leaders at http://www.llli.org.

Keep us posted...you're doing great!

I agree with the ladies...trust your instincts.

A lot of the info that is in the books or that doctors go by is outdated. Even 5 years ago (when I had my 1st) the recommendation was to feed 15-20 minutes on each side at each sitting. They now konw that isn't necessary. You just want to be sure you're having baby latch on long enough to get hindmilk, which your little girl is! Other than that things will be different for each mom-baby combo. Some like switching breasts in one sitting. Some nurse only on one side a sitting. Do what feels right for you and your little one. YOu're doing wonderfully!
