Lately my son has become distracted by everything while nursing. He will nurse for a min then let go. Look away. Then want to continue. He will do this over and over again throughout the entire meal. Sometimes it hurts when he pops off the way he does. How can I get him to be less distracted and finish? I've tried a toy bear for him to hold, and I've tried the dark room. But nothing helped tocure his curiosity.

I haven't read (so sorry if I'm repeating someone else), but I have an Ameda Purely Yours and I love it. It's $150 (or $200 with the bag and cooler) and is a really good pump. I had an Evenflo and the motor started dying at 11 weeks, so I had to invest in a better one. It has control over the suction speed and strength to assist in letdown and it's pretty compact, so it's not hard to carry around. I also pump at least 3 times a day and it had kept up with me just fine. The Medela has the same letdown feature and cooler options also. Honestly, the one two pumps that seem to have consistently great reviews are Medela and Ameda, so I would focus on those. It's definetly worth the money to get a good one! Good luck  !

when my guy does that I tell him that he either needs to eat or get down. If he does it again I put him down. He either goes and plays or cries. If he cries I give him 30 seconds or a minute and then try again, usually he eats at that point. You can also try going off in a room by yourselves. I didn't look to see how old he is, but it's not uncommon for a4 or 5 month old to start getting interested in other things and having peace around you can make BFing easier for a while.

good luck.

Thanks. He just turned 4 months. I go to the bedroom where it is quiet and dark, he still looks around. I'll try being more strict (don't think that is the word I'm looking for).

Should I just tell him no, and end the session? Or is he too young to understand that?

well even if he doesnt understand it quite yet, he will begin to learn what it means. i wouldnt like freak out on him, but maybe just say it in a serious tone, but not mean or anything. i usually try to talk to lylian, even though she might not understand me, like i say "you need to eat or get down" and if she doesnt eat i will say "ok you are done now" and put her down.

I have the Ameda Purely Yours dual electric and I'm pleased with it. I have nothing to compare it to though. I keep hearing how the Medela only takes 5-10 minutes to pump 5 oz. and it makes me jealous lol. It takes me 20-30 minutes to pump that much. However, that could just be me and not the pump - it's hard to say!

I'll try it. Never hurts to try right?

& Don't worry, I'm not the yelling type.   Thank you for the advice.

On a good day, I can get about 4 oz per side in about 5-10 minutes with my Ameda...good stuff. I'm sorry it's a slow process for you...at least you're getting the same end result though. The milk is all that matters  !

Hmmm...it probably could if you are getting dehydrated and not getting enough calories. Make sure you are drinking lots of water and you may want to try drinking somethihng like Ensure or some other type of supplement to help yourself get calories...you may be able to absorb more from something along those lines! I hope things get better for you!
