Accuracy of Ultrasound for Gender Determination...

posted 30th Dec '07
Hi, I just had my ulrasound sound done and found out that I am having a girl. I was18 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I had an ultrasound done earlier at 11/12 weeks (due to a car accident) and the technician (and my husband) thought theyboth saw something which could mean we're having a boy- but ofcourse it was way too early to be sure then. This time to my surprise I was told I was having a girl. However, I am still wondering how accurate ultrasounds generally are. I personally know two friends who were told to expect boys but ended up having girls instead! Could it be the other way round too? Is there any chance that I could be having a boy too? Has anyone had such an experience?

My cousin was told girl her whole pregnancy and SHE came out a HE. its very possible. i was told i was definitely having a girl, but that was at an ultrasound place that you go to for gender determination. ultrasound techs are more or less there to make sure the babys okay the gender is just whatever to them. i say if you have doubts double check before going and buying all pink lol

I was wondering the same thing recently...the tech at my ultrasound told me 85% sure its a girl...i bought some pink stuff but still unsure if i should stick to more yellow and green still.....

Sorry I'm not much help! =)

My understanding is that the accuracy depends on your tech and how sure they are and how much experience they have.
However, it's a lot easier to mistake a boy for a girl (the "boy parts" might just be hiding and because there aren't boy parts they assume its a girl) than it is to mistake a girl for a boy.
If you saw three lines on your ultrasound, you can pretty much bet its a girl. If it's just missing a penis there is still a chance it's a boy. Does that make sense?

Here is my little girl's ultrasound. There is pretty much no doubt she is a girl, it's pretty clear.

Yeah that happens that girls be mistaken for boys cause the cord can get in the way my friend was told early on that hers was a boy and she found out when the child was born that it was a girl!! Now as for it being a boy after being told it was a girl im not sure about. I have done lots of u/s so we are sure this one is a boy. Maybe if you get another u/s ask them to make sure.

My doctor said the same thing at 11 weeks...that it looks like a boy... i was bumming big time since I have a little boy already and was really hoping for a girl! Then at my 18 week 4 day ultrasound...no sign of any little boy parts and he was pretty sure it was a girl. He confirmed it was a girl at my following 22 week ultrasound. I think it is interesting that techs, or docs speculate about the sex before 16-18 weeks since the outer genitals pretty much look the same in boys and girls till this point!! At my 27 week ultrasound there was no mistaking she's a girl!! The older the baby the easier to tell. And boys tend to "pop" out at you big time! There was no mistaking my son was a boy by 16 weeks!!

Yes, you COULD be having a boy. But chances are you are having a girl. The u/s you saw at 11 weeks was probly less accurate. The Part they saw could have been the umblical(sp) cord or a leg? But the baby is more developed down their. Maby you can ask for another U/S. I went in at 20 weeks to find the gender. They said it was a girl or a shy boy . So I went back in and they said it looks like a girl. But they still are not 100% sure. You could be having a boy. My Cousin was told she was having a girl and she birthed a boy. So did my friend Stacy with her second child. Its very posible.

There is only one person that I know that has had a mis-diagnoisis if you will on their u/s, and that was my MIL when she was pregnant with my husband years ago. She was told she was expecting a girl and obviously he's all GUY! LOL! Boy's are usually harder to miss, obviously because they usually have their little "beans" poking out where as with girls they are looking for three lines like a "burger"! LOL!
But it can happen to anyone, for all I know my u/s tech could have been wrong about our son, but if you get lucky like we did, you can see his foot in the same picture and you can tell you're basicly looking up between the legs at him... To me and basicly everyone that has reciently had boys themselves it's pretty obvious what's "poking" out infront of him!

Well theres never a 100% grantee in ultrasounds or for anything really, in general speaking, but they technician shouldnt even tell you the gender unless they are very sure of what they are seeing, i hada private 3d ultrasound done at 35 weeks, so the bigger my baby the more obvious it was for if my baby was a male or female, and when we had our scan done( the gender process is always done in 2D scan) then before the technician even said it, me and my husband could see our baby boys private parts as clear as day! It was just so so so obvious because of the size and gestation that he was then the tech confirmed that we are expecting a baby boy, so i soppose its more likely to be accurate the bigger the baby....thats what i think anyways! but so far people ive known their scans have turned out to be accurate.....

i always thought it was possible to mistake a girl for a boy - since the cord can sometimes get in the way and ofcourse I personally know two friends who went thru this but is it really possible to mistake a boy for a girl? Has anyone been thru that? I mean if its a boy, it should be pretty obvious... shouldnt it? I guess perhaps 18 weeks 5 days is still a little early - maybe i should wait for another ultrasound to be sure before going overboard with pink!

I've been told that by 18-20 weeks the u/s's are usually quite accurate, but obviously mistakes can happen....

At 11 weeks sex organs aren't even formed. How could your US tech be able to tell you anything?

Which is pretty much what I said in my post. Why they even speculate before 16 weeks is beyond me??

Exactly.. it's fun to guess or try to predict.. but to actually have a doctor tell you at 11 weeks what the sex is? That's almost laughable.

baby sex organs look IDENTICAL until 13 weeks, and most of the time, you can't tell the difference until 18-20 weeks for sure!
