Infants with down syndrom... Any info please?

posted 28th Dec '07
I just had my second child, a son, on 12-18-07. Through the pregnany everything seemed normal, up to the last trimester... i went into preterm labor twice, both times it was managed to be stopped... on the 18th at about two i was working and out of no where my water broke, i wasnt having cotractions, or any pains... i went to the hospital nd five hours later he was here...
Me and my husband couldnt have been any happier...
Two hours later our doctor came in with some upsetting news... They are pretty sure he has down syndrom... Our hearts dropped...
We are stillwaiting on the gentic test results to come in, but my doctor believes he has downs because he has every physical feature of a child with downs...
It is hard to handle all this, especially since i have no one to listen and share stories with, i have no one to ask for advice... If anyone has any info to share with me please do so, i am in desprate need of some advice on handling this situation...

I am sorry for your sad news. I don't have any info to share with you regarding downs but I was curious...isn't Downs' syndrome something they test for as part of prenatal care now? I am sure it is never foolproof but I was just wondering. Again, so sorry for your news and good luck...

we have severals downs babies in our nursery and they are the sweetest little things, and such good babies too!

I am sure everything will work out fine regardless of the genetic testing. God only gives his special angels to really special mommies

o i love him just as i would if everything was normal, im not so concerned with the downs part, just means he'll need extra attention, im more concerned with all the medical problems that come linked to having downs... They do, do testing for it in the beginning of pregnancy, however my husband an i both declined the gentic testing during pregnany unless they found something abnormal in tthe ultra sound, which they didnt... plus the test arent always accurate and often give false answers to parents... either way we wouldnt have ended the pregnancy if we would had found out then... I dont know any raising a child with downs, no one in either family has downs, and i feel like even when trying to discuss my worries with my husband, that even he cant relate to how i feel... i do trust my doctor and believe what he says, i can look at my son and see all the physical features of downs, i will feel better once the results are in and there is no more pondering and waiting for the results, thank you all for your encouragment though... sometimes its all that is needed

What other child is perfect? none. so either you or your baby did something special. My sister had trisomy 18 didn't live cause its WAY worse then down syndrome, she is our angel. You will learn like others said that this baby is a real angel in disguise.

Congratulations on your new baby! Downs is just an extra challenge, but downs children are so lovable I'm sure you will do fine and think of this benefit - he will never be embarrased to give you a hug, no matter how old he gets!! I also didn't do the prenatal genetic testing, we are never given more than we can handle!

RE: testing, they can test for your statistical chances of having a downs baby (quad test) but it's not very accurate and a lot of moms choose not to have it done. I had it done against pretty much everyone's recommendation, and I wish I hadn't because I screened positive and had to have an amnio to get a difinitive answer. (He doesn't have DS)

My cousin has DS, and his case is pretty severe, but the spectrum of severity is VERY wide. A lot of DS people have such mild cases you can't even tell they have it. And I've never met a DS child whose parents wanted him/her any different. Very loveable kids! My aunt and uncle wouldn't trade my cousin for the world.
