Abcess tooth.

posted 7th Dec '10
I'm pretty certain I have an abcess tooth. My doctor told me that if I see a dentist, chances are they won't pull it. What will they do? Has anyone else had an abcess while pregnant? It's incredibly painful.

Give you antibiotics, they wont pull it until the infection is cleared, they may not even pull it just do a rroot canal.

I've never had a root canal before... does it hurt?
Will they wait until after the baby's born to do it?

I just posted something similar. I know what you are going through and it blows! I have a dentist appt in the morning and I am extremely nervous. Mine is due to a root canal procedure(that probably failed). From what I have read online either, they will do a root canal procedure or pull the tooth.

your teeth are VERY important during pregnancy. an abscessed tooth can KILL you if the infection spreads. they WILL pull it but will use different anesthesia so it doesnt affect the babies heartbeat. it will be more pressure/painful than the normal anesthesia but not really hurt... ive been there. i broke my tooth in half and had to have it pulled. there was no choice in the matter. id rather risk the anesthesia possibly affecting the baby than the infection spreading and potentially killing me and my baby.

You should get on the antibiotics. They probably wouldn't do a root canal till after you have the baby. But the tooth will get worse and you'll feel like your gonna die from the pain. Get meds quick!

I have no problem getting it pulled or a root canal, I just don't want it to hurt my baby. My gyno said they won't pull it unless they have to. I have to go back to Louisiana for a few days to see my dentist [I'm in Mississippi], how long will it take them to pull the tooth if they do? Like, when I go in and tell them, will they pull it that day?

as long as you are out of the first trimester the risks of the anesthesia is less than the risk of keeping the infected tooth in your mouth. they WILL do it and she should have it done.

they will pull it if your dentist is also an oral surgeon. otherwise you will get scheduled to see one of those to have it pulled. it takes all of one minute to pull it once you are numb. my procedure took 20 minutes total. but the remainder of my tooth did not chip or anything during the pulling either which makes it easier

So in the event of having it pulled, it will be done quickly?
That's reassuring.

Regular dentists can pull them also... My dentist is not an oral surgeon and he pulled mine..

Do you have a fake tooth now? If so, how long did it take for you to get the fake one put in?

Yeah, and you won't feel a thing (assuming they do the anesthesia correctly) but for a fair warning you will hear awful noises.

considering you AND your baby could die from the infection from the tooth [it gets into your blood stream and spreads to your brain, heart, etc...] , id get it done... the risk of the anesthesia is WAY less and you can opt for differant types which as less likely to transfer to the baby and affect their heart rate. it might be more uncomfortable for you, but its safer.
