severe eczema

posted 23rd Dec '07
My son is suffering from some extremely awful eczema. Its become infected with staph and he has been on an antibacterial cream for his face/head and a steroid cream for his body and also an oral antibacterial.
But it seems to be flaring up worse and with the holidays i cant get him to see his Pedi until at the very least thursday.
Has anyone else's child experienced this? what did you do to help it improve or go away?
I need advice, my son is suffering badly and Urgent Care and his shitty dermatologist cant help. the only one who seems to care and want to help is his pedi... and like i said, seeing him is about 5 or 6 days away at the least.

this is him two days ago, its much worse today. Today there are white crusty patches that look to me like they're becoming the fungal infection his pedi warned pay occur.

i had it a lot less severe than your son does.

It may not be clearing up because he has the infection...or since it IS kind of like a wound or burn spot...i know its just super super dry...but it may just take a few weeks to start clearing. keep him cool...the one thing i remember most is how effing bad it itched....my mom would put me in an oatmeal bath and i would love it. lukewarm water and aveeno oatmeal...they will help some of that red irritation go down too and maybe help speed the healing.

oatmeal bath huh? i'll have to try that because hes definitely very itchy, and then he scratches so much despite our efforts to stop him and just ends up making his face raw and sore.
We've been putting him on childrens benadryl for the itching... but i would prefer a method that didnt involve so much medicine.
im going to try that, thanks!

hope it gets better soon....

oh my goodness, poor little baby. i am sorry that he's having to deal with that. my daughter had it but not nearly as bad. and there wasn't anything really that they could do except what they done for your little one with the creams and stuff. but surely they can find something that can help when he has it as bad as he does.

I'm so sorry that your little man is going through that. My son has just developed eczema and I feel so bad for him. I have no suggestions because I've never had anything like this before, but I did want to say that C posted so good websites in Resources and Links. You may want to check those out.

Have you changed his body wash and your laundry detergent? Mine has it...but not as bad as your little man. They had me switch my detergent to All Free & Clear, unscented fabric softners and dryer sheets too. Also, I can't use any "baby" bath products...only Dove Unscented body wash. They told me that anything with the word baby in it had drying agents in it and it would make things worse. And then Eucerin lotion and cream. They also have me put 1% Hydrocortison cream on her places twice a day for itching. I changed everyone in the houses detergent to the All F&C and we all use the same body wash now. I don't wear any perfumes or anything in fear that it may be the cause.

Personally, if you have tried all of this I would go to the ER and get their opinion. Hope this helps.

My son has eczema too, but its only on his body and arms. Right now we are using grins and giggles oatmeal bath every other day since its not good to wash away the natural oils and eucern non-sented hypoallergenic lotion twice day. I also use 1% hydrocortisone cream on the really bad areas. This has become a religious routine and I have seen improvement over the past week or so. If your son has an area that is really bothering him you can apply something cold to it like and ice pack or something. The cold helps to sooth the irritation and might keep him from scratching at it so much.

aw God bless his little self. that looks like it is so friggen aggravating and miserable.

I would say that the ER probably wont be much help. They dont know your child dont know his case and may hurt more than they can help.

if nothing else call your dox leave a message and see if he will call something in to your pharmacy.
