SIDS and Immunizations

posted 23rd Dec '07
Do any of you think there is a link between these?
My son is about ready to get 6 vaccinations (we did not get his Hep B shot at birth) and I am freaking out bad. I keep teeter-tottering back and forth about how I feel about vaccines. I just think its crazy...SIDS is at its peak in babies between 2 and 4 months...thus being the first time when theyrecieve a heavy vaccination schedule. 1 in 8 babies that die of SIDS , die within 1 week after recieveing their 2 month vaccines....but yet the CDC says there is no link.
Im scared. I feel like its such a 50/50 decision with my sons life.....other then a mothers instics (which are telling me NO shots till later on, when hes a FEW months older) how do us moms know whats safe anymore.

My suggestion? Don't get them all at once. Set up a schedule with your baby's doctor that is more comforting to you. They reccommend them all at once like that, but it's not necessary. If you're more comfortable, limit it to the top three. Ask questions about the risks and benefits. Just get open and honest answers. And if you're not comfortable with it after, or their answers aren't clear enough for you, don't do it.

I will tell you, though, my daughter has gotten a total of five at once and she is now two years old. She was okay and so was her big brother. So, try to relax!! :-)

I never really qeustioned getting immunizations for my son... ever. I always saw all those commericials that said dont wait to vaccinate and such. You know, all the ones that show the kids in the hospital with whooping cough and the what not. I'm still gonna get him the immunizations, but after reading the same issue in D&D I'm going to be watching my son very closely.

I, personally, never questioned it, either. It was just natural, it's what you do. For me, anyway. I had a lot to watch out for, too. My husband and I are severe asthmatics, so we are really concerned about our children and their breathing. FORTUNATELY, neither of them have any signs or symptoms of being asthmatic.

I feel the vaccinations are really just what you feel comfortable with. I also believe reading up on everything and anything is going to make you so high strung you won't enjoy raising your children.

I have my decision made. I am VERY...almost obsesivly educated on childhood vaccines (my son had a life altering reaction after his MMR shot a 17 months old)
I guess I was just looking for peoples opinions..and what their personal views are on this matter, or if any mommies on here who have lost, or known someone who has lost a baby to SIDS could share their view on their personal knowledge and expierence/opinions etc.....like if they had gotton their babies vaccinated or not.
I dont know. Im just scared i guess. Being a mommy is so hard sometimes.
Loving someone so much can be scary.

That is very true. We try so hard to protect them and make sure they grow up all right... and life throws us the uncontrollable.

we waited till later with the my younger son and we will wait with Gianna.

They dont go to daycare....Damon is four and done with his for school next year...Gia will get hers when she is 2 or 3...

I just dont want to take that risk...plus who knows by the time gia is 2 or 3 maybe they will have proven or disproven the link between sids and the vaccines.

Both my brothers had issues that my parents now feel were related to immunizations...

My older brother, Damon, almost died from SIDS shortly after he got all his shots at once (this was 27/28 years ago... they just didn't know...) He had to be hooked up to machines that would alert mom and dad every time he would quit breathing - something like 17 times a night. Then with me, everything was fine so my little brother, John, got all of his shots... and was later diagnosed as being Autistic...

I dunno, it might all be a big coincidence... but I really am thinking long and hard about any decision I make with her getting immunized.

Ok, I can't help but point this out, based completely on your post. I've not done any other research. You said that peak for sids is 2-4 months and that 1 in 8 happen within a week of vaccines. Well, in that 2 month time frame, there are 8 weeks, so 1 in 8 within the first week would make sense, along with the other 7 being in the other 7 weeks.

"Even if there is no relationship between immunizations and SIDS, as many as one-in-eight SIDS victims will die within a week of their immunization. Thus, a large number of SIDS babies have died within days, or even hours, of their immunization"

i totally do get what youre saying troll1984.....it just still scares me enough to second guess shots...thats all.

i just found this....worth the read to help form opinions.

I have this opinion on immunizations:
I have hyperlexia, or it could be Asperger's, the doctors "can't quite figure it out" which one  ...It's been thought that I have always had it. Since there is absolutely NO history of autism in my family, either side, the only thing I can pinpoint it to is immunizations I received as a child. Now, I'm coming to the realization that my 7 year old has been displaying symptoms also, since he was 2 years old.
I haven't taken Madden in for his 4 month shots yet, and I won't until i can discuss ti all with my doc first.

I personally do not believe it's any coincidence. More and more cases of people suffering from Autism are being brought out. Do you have any idea how many of us as adults are now discovering that we're autistic, even if it's a mild form and high-functioning?
