vaccinate my baby or not?

posted 20th Nov '10
me and DH are talking about if we should vaccinate the baby...I really don't know what to do...I know the horrid things they put in there but both our families say the baby needs them....Also if we deside not to..how do I get her into school without those shots? How do I know if the doctor gives her those shots when she is born? How do I refuse them?

Here they can go to school without them no problem. If you don't want vaccinations you just tell them that you don't want them. Put it in your birth plan and tell them verbally as well.

That said, I recommend "The Vaccine Book" by dr Sears that goes into each vaccine in depth.

Personally my kids are almost fully vaccinated.

I would just research the issue yourself, and do what you feel is best for your child ^_^

If you're uncomfortable with the ingredients, maybe try delaying them or selectively vaccinating your baby. Or both, lol.

ETA: My daughter isn't vaccinated. She's almost six months, and she's never been sick, or colicky, or anything. The only thing she might get vaccinated for is meningitis. Unless there are epidemics around your area, personally, I wouldn't worry too much.

My son will be 100% vaccinated. Flue shots, chicken pox, all of that. The risk of any neurological or physical reaction is so tiny and worth not losing my child to some ridiculous disease like measles or polio.

If you dont want them then you simply say that. They have forms to fill out, exemptions, that allow the into school without their shots.

Personally, we vaccinate. I've done a lot of research and many of the things people list may be gross, but not really dangerous. I'd suggest doing a LOT of research on both sides. Do not ONLY take the advice from pro-vaxing sites just like you should not take all the information from anti-vaxing sourcers. You need to look at both.

My LO is 9 months old, had a suppressed immune system and damaged lungs. She has had all her shots on time including the flu shot and now RSV shots (it's a medicine but still) and she's never been sick at all since coming home.

You just have to weight the pro's and con's and then make the choice you feel carry's the lowest risk.

lol @ misspelled flu, but yeah. If you can't decide yet, I'd recommend just delaying until you can make a fully informed decision.

^^Great information. There are plenty of parents on here that do not vaccinate. As for attending school, you can sign vax exemption forms. The only states, that I know of, that do not exempt are Mississippi and West Virginia.

Some pediatricians will deny further care if you do not vaccinate so your best bet is to call around now and find a pedi that supports non-vaxing.

If you are unsure, best thing to do is not do it now. If you decide later that you want them you can start up later.

I don't, and here for school you just have to sign some papers.

They will not and cannot vaccinate your child without your permission. Babies receive the Vitamin K shot at birth, but it is not a vaccine, it just helps their blood to clot. I would suggest doing some research on the vaccines, and then decide what is best. You're going to get mixed opinions on this issue, but in the end, it's your decision.

Personally, I selectively vaccinate my child.

I don't Vaccinate but that is because 1) my baby brother passed away from it (doctor proven) and 2) my son got seizures from them (also doctor proven)

But it's up to you. Every child is different and every parent feels different. Research the pros and cons and choose for yourself

I refused the shots at the hospital, so we had a delayed schedule. She's gotten pretty much everything but I refuse flu and chicken pox. They definitely can't vaccinate without your permission. You will have to fill out paperwork.

That's not how it works. You have to sign an informed consent form. They cannot legally vaccinate your child without your permission. Maybe your cousin didn't pay attention to what she was signing, or maybe they just stuck the form in her face and said "sign this"?

What? I had to sign a paper in order for them to give Xavier the Hep B vaccine... I declined.
