There are very few schools that actually offer a degree in it, just a heads up. It is also going to depend on what school. Mine was under college of Social science and Humanities.

Totally missed this post. Just wanted to say congrats on the school thing and your daughter be so successful, even if it does mean she doesn't get to join in the class. Maybe there are other classes around or just groups that encourage ASL?

Oh, totally go for it, I just wanted to let you know that it might not be from lack of trying that you aren't finding them. They just are few and far between. I lucked out that one of the best programs around was less than 5 miles from my house!

wow! that's great! I wish I could get back into signing. It was something I really wanted to do before I got pg and something I did for awhile with my first son (now 27m), but I've really been slacking since he's been able to talk, but today, I lost my voice, so it would be nice to have some signs I could do!

Not looking for a degree, just to be an interpreter. The local community college offers it here.

Thank you! We have really fallen in love with ASL, its flippin' beautiful!
Possibly, i'll look into it soon. We just signed up for Pool group & still have a few more months of yoga before I take on anything else ;)

They offer what? a degree in interpreting or just ASL classes? Just a heads up, from what I understand, most states and I believe the national test are going to start requiring people to have a degree in interpreting if they want to take the test (if the state doesn't require it already as many do).

Not just MA, many states. If they aren't requiring it now, they will be soon. Even codas, children of deaf adults, are required to get degrees despite interpreting their entire lives and growing up bilingual.

I can't find it, but I swear I read it online from places like Gallaudet that it needed to be in interpreting. But RID Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf says any hearing person is required to have at least a BA degree in order to take the test.

good luck to anyone entering an ITP.

it's a lot harder than you think.   I was in the program for two years and ended up switching my major because it wasn't working for me, and i wanted to go down a different career path.

if you want to be an interpreter, and don't know sign language fluently already, i highly suggest going to a college that has an ITP. (Interpreter Training Program)

I learned A TON, it's not just learning sign language, there is a LOT more involved.

just a heads up.

This. There's Deaf culture, Deaf history, Linguistics, Interpreting ethics, various types of interpreting classes all focused on a different aspect of interpreting, as well as higher level English classes, etc. It's a bit daunting when you get the list! Also most programs require you to be involved with the community which includes both volunteering as well as going to Deaf events with an assignment to look for certain things or chat with the people there about certain things. It's very very time consuming. Towards the end they might also require an internship while you are taking classes.
