re: Incompetent Cervix Support Group

They said it was too much of a rick due to multiple factors for the IC. I think it depends on the condition, if you started dilating already and wether or not you have other high risk complications. I know that I have a dual but ant placenta and when the first started to break at preterm labor they said he was too big and too low for the IC. I just have to stay in bed and trust the doc.

I'm sorry for your loss. I suggest making small milestone goals and when your reach them celebrate! Whether just with a nice treat or going out if possible. The small goals are great accomplishments for us!

I found out I have an incompetent cervix at 20 weeks with my son in Jan 2010. I was dilated to 3 and at a big risk for my water to break at anytime. My Doctor gave my two options bed rest alone or the next day I would get a cerclage stitch. I went ahead and got the stitch the next day and it was a success! I kept my little man in while on bedrest until 38weeks!!! Now I'm 8 weeks pregnant and nervous about what will happen. My doctor said unless I dilate she plans on giving my progesterone shots only no stitch. I'm having a hard time understanding her suggestion when the stitch worked last time and from what I can find their is not a lot of research on these shots or their success. I just want a healthy full term baby. She said if I want the stitch she will do it. So I think I'm going to go ahead and do the stitch at 14 weeks. Has anyone with IC done just these shots and no stitch? Also has anyone heard of any effects on the baby from the shots?

our body already makes progesterone, so the shot its just extra, and from what I understand, there is no harm to baby from the shots...

Some women actually do well with just progesterone and bed rest but the bed rest is there. The progesterone doesn't prevent dilation...just preterm labor. It relaxes the uterus. I would definitely push for a stitch if it's worked before.

Hello, Im Michaela (makayla) i lost my Daughter Brooklyn at 20 weeks. She lived for 35 mins, they didnt even tried to save her. Her heartbeat was great but said her lungs couldnt be developed at 20 weeks. So i had to sit there and watch my daughter suffer with no air to breath for 35 mins this disturbs me. But before i get to upset i just wanna get to the point
So mainly i just wanted to introduce myself, and say im so glad that this page was created because before i went into labor i had no idea about me having IC or even what it was. But also i wanted to ask if some of you could go to my page and look at some of my recent post and give me some advice. I think, well im pretty sure im pregnant again.

Hi All, I am new to this site but I'm set up on google to get alerts on anything IC related!!! Just want to share my story really ......I lost a baby girl about 4 years ago now due to IC at 19 weeks. At the time the docs thought it was an infection that made my waters break, but in my second pregnancy my cervix started shortening at around 19.5 weeks so they decided I had IC and that the first loss was probably due to IC too. Luckily, this time round, I was kept in hospital for a week, lying flat on my back til they decided what they would do. First of all they started me on the progesterone pessaries (daily) to relax everything and then they scanned me again. As there was no further shortening (helped by bedrest) and as there was a little bit of cervix left they decided to give me an emergency stitch. After a few days I was allowed to go home, but then had to be on strict bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy, still taking the pessaries and clexane injections - only going to the loo and showering allowed!!! I had consultant appointments fortnightly where they scanned my cervix and luckily for me nothing was moving and the stitch was doing an amazing job!! At around 30 weeks I was allowed to get a little more active as the doc said that I was at a good stage and as I had already had the steroid injections, if baby did come early, things would be OK. Unfortunately at around 32 weeks I developed pre-eclampsia so was back in hospital again getting my blood pressure under control. At 33+2 they decided that things were getting a little dangerous with my blood pressure and decided they would take my stitch out ready for inducement. They did say that as soon as the stitch came out, it was quite likely that I would go into labour but nearly 2 days later my cervix was still very tightly shut so at 33+5 I had a c-section and now have a beautiful little 2 year old boy!! If it wasn't for pre-eclampsia my consultant was pretty sure that I would have gone full term. We are now thinking of trying for a second baby and I am very scared of what will happen as with a toddler, it would be a nightmare to be on bedrest, but about 6 months ago I visited my consultant and he assured me that he really thinks that now we know about the IC problem, we are able to take preventative measures rather than emergency measures like before, so at around 14 weeks the stitch will be inserted and he even said that he wouldn't encourage strict bedrest this time as it can do more harm than good in some cases and as it was so successful last time in an emergency situation he thinks it should work well or even better in a planned situation? So, that's my story, and I hope it gives some of you a little more insight about the stitch. I would definitely recommend it rather than taking a chance, it was painless and successful and was my only chance of ever having a successful pregnancy. Good luck everyone and take care.

I am 34 weeks 2 days...I have IC and have been on the injections since I was 16 weeks. No stitch...they have to have a reason to do a stitch...so they will watch you closely... I didnt get a stitch because I was 25 weeks when the issues started to arise. It was too late for the stitch due to the complications of doing it at that stage. I was hospitalized then at 25 weeks until 32 weeks...Baby is still in and I am having a planned c section nov 8th at 36 weeks...Due to a classical csection. I also am on nifedipene and still reciving injections.
They have never hurt...steriods are another story...those hurt like a b**ch

actually they don't have to have a reason to do the stitch, if you have a history of IC, then they will do the stitch, no matter if you are dilating or not, depends on the doctor

This! If you don't have a history they usually don't catch it until outs too late sadly

Okay, I'm going to try posting here...since everyone in the group is pretty much in the same situation or has been.
I'm having a cerclage tomorrow. I'm terrified. Mostly I just don't know what to expect, as far as afterwards. Hopefully, this will keep me from miscarrying again though...if so, all the anxiety and (I hear) pain afterwards will be worth it!

Had mine put in (double McDonald) Friday. I had some mild cramping that day but just that day then spotting that day and the next day. Spotting was VERY light.
I am normal again now.

at 16 weeks, my cervix measured 4.1 cm.
at 20 weeks, my cervix measured 3.3 cm.
i have been on the P17 injections since 16 weeks. a cerclage has not yet been discussed, but if it continues to shrink, i'm sure we will go that route.
my next cervical measurement is on 11/9. i've been laying down and resting as much as possible, so i'm hoping the shrinking has stopped.
