Concerned about Colposcopy

posted 12th Dec '07
As I mentioned in previous post my pap smear came back abnormal and I am scheduled to have a Colposcopy next Tuesday. I will be 11 weeks along in my pregnancy but I am really concerned about having this done while I am pregnant and so early on in the pregnancy. Is it saafe to do while pregnant and is it safe while you are in your first trimester?

I had a colposcopy done two years ago...It was much like a regular exam except they poured this vinegar like solution on my cervix and then looked at it through a machine. They then took a tiny biopsy to send off to the lab. I wasn't pregnant when I had this done, but I wouldn't been too concerned if your dr. recommended that you have it done.

i just read up about that i don't think it'll harm anything.... if the doctor says you need it done theni think its safe to have it done while pregnant.

I had the saame thing with both of my pregnancies. It might sting a little bit, but it's not harmful to the baby at all. They just go on the outside of the cervix. Ntohing comes in contact with your baby.. They'll probably wait until after you have the baby and check again. When they checked me again after having my daughter everything came back normal. Sometimes pregnancy can make pap smears come out abnormal... Don't be worried... I'm sure everything's fine

a colposcopy is simply them looking up there with a high powered microscope, and they do put something on the cervix to make an abnormal cells show up clearer. The thing to be a tad concerned about is the biopsy. If during the colposcopy they see abnormal cells they'll need to take a little snip to send to the lab to process to see if they're cancerous or not. I had it done about 3 years ago and it didn't hurt much, just an uncomfy feeling.

I wouldn't let them do it while preggo however, i've heard it can possibly weaken your cervix or even cause miscarriage so just make sure you do tons of research and ask your doctor any questions you may have before beginning the procedure...you tend to forget the important stuff when you have your legs open and up in the air haha

Mine came back abnormal, but they're going to wait until after the pregnancy to preform the colposcopy. I've had it done before, and had so much anxiety, but wasn't bad. I think I just have abnormal cells is all...but I'm higher risk from cervical cancer running in my family and my past cancer that is linked to cervical so have to be more careful. Good luck and do some research!

I had one at about 13 weeks. My pap came back really abnormal like there was high chance for invasive cancer, i had the colp and she took a biopsy from 2 areas and found nothing. Biopsies were completely normal. She said hormones do crazy things to the cervix and make it look really strange and usually its absolutely nothing. I had just a little weird discharge after it for a few days, but that's from the medicine they put on the cervix to make it glow, and also from the stuff to keep the biopsy place from bleeding and to make it heal fast. it was only on the outside of the cervix, so nowhere close to the baby. i know its really scary but just try to think that its probably nothing. just a little blip in the road to being a mommy

ya I got mine done around 15 weeks, It just stings like fire in your vagina, but its over fast.. the sting is from the Vinagar, and its really IN office fast type check, No mchines just a Speculum(spl?) the doctors eyes and a swab, If they find anything they wanna check they will tell you before taking a sample. Luckly they didn't with me.

i had one done before i knew i was pregnant i found out 10days after thati was pregnant and iwas worried but my dr assured me that i was fine even sent me in for an u/s at 5weeks so i could see everything was ok. youll be fine. me on the other hand i have to do it again after and the cut really hurts but only for a second if you can give birth you can do anything. but then i have to have my cervix frozen and scraped to remove my hpv and dysplasia i have. its common and almost normal these days to have it so dont worrie just doo what your dr tells u k.

My pregnancy pap came back abnormal so they tested me for HPV. Since that was negative, they said I was low risk for cancer and told me I could wait until after the pregnancy to have another pap. Like others have said above a lot of times the pregnancy hormones make the cells look funny, but afterwards you can go back to normal.

thats great for you im glad you dont have it but get the gardisil if you can studies say that 80% of women will have some form of hpv before they are 50. so everybody ask for the gardisil shot after you have your babies. i am even gonna get it and i have hpv but once the infected tissue is removed it will prevent it coming back. but i had an abnormal pap a year before i even tried getting pregnant so my case is a lil different but your right pregnancy can make the cells look funny just like it can make cysts appear.
