Bubble baths cause Urinary Tract Infections?

posted 25th Oct '10
I have a two and a half year old little girl and when filling up her bath tub I put Johnson's vapor bath into the water as it was filling up so clear up her runny nose and it created a bubble bath. I know that girls under 3 years old shouldn't have bubble baths because it can cause UTI's. I was just wondering if any mommy's out there have given their two year daughter's a bubble bath and if they got a UTI from it? Thanks.

when i was growing up we never had the option to shower.. we only had a bath.. and the only way we would bath is if there were TONS of bubbles in it..
I have never had a UTI.. neither has my mom or sister- we swear its cuz we still bathe more than shower.

Some girls are sensitive to it and some aren't. I could never take bubble baths when I was a little girl, and even now I have to be careful what kind of soaps I use, etc. Not only because of UTI's but also because that skin/area is just so sensitive.

I totally agree. I think it is good for woman to bathe rather then shower simply bc it just lets everything get clean better (IMO).

It absolutely can, but it's of course not going to happen to every little girl. My LO was hospitalized when she was 3 months old for a UTI. Her pedi and the hospital thinks J&J vapor bath may have contributed to it.

See i just use J&J baby shampoo to make bubbles. Maybe it's the vapor bath?

Could have been. We've used it again since then and she hasn't had a problem though. We've also used the actual bubble bath from J&J and had no UTI problems. In the past 8 months or so we haven't been able to have any bath time bubble fun because she has eczema.

It was my mother in law that told me about it. She has a little girl who is 4, (big age difference between her son and her daughter) she refuses to ever let her take bubble baths cause she was raised to believe that they cause UTI's. It never made sense to me either, I figured it would help the area get clean. I googled it and saw that doctors say it causes them because traces of soap can stay on the urethra and irritate it and it can be painful for them to pee so they hold in their pee and it causes a UTI. But all of you have basically proven that it might just be one those things that drs say can happen but it rarely does happen. I am so relieved because she LOVED the bubbles in her bath and I know she is going to keep asking for them now.

I think it's a generational thing. I've only heard things like that from my mother's generation. (Also about hot tubs.) In my experience it's a complete myth. There might be some sensitive people out there though.

It's def true & it doesn't happen to everyone, just those with sensitive skin and/or those who are using especially irritating soap. If you know your child is sensitive (sometimes runs in families) try an organic soap that doesn't have harsh chemicals/fragrances/dyes that irritate. My favorite is California Baby, & they have a great bubble bath. My poor niece just went through this, she's 2 1/2 and just graduated from using baby soaps to a "Spongebob" body wash/bubble bath. In the 2 months she's used this soap she had 2 UTIs, the first was very serious & she was vomiting & spiked fevers over 103 for days. The Dr finally asked if she'd changed soaps recently, b/c it irritates the vulva & urethra & that allows more bacteria in the urethra/bladder, along w/ causing painful urination which makes them hold in their urine, causing the bacteria to grow. Also, I think maybe the reason why older generations don't use bubble baths at all or want little girls to shower only is b/c they didn't have as many special baby soaps back then & soaps were harsher, just an idea.
