I am a few days late w/ this post - my apologies. Hands have been full w/ a newborn and a 2-year old.
On Sunday the 25th I started having back-to-back Braxton Hicks. It started during the Seattle Seahawks football game and I didnt want to disturb hubby, so I drank lots of water, ate a good meal, changed my position several times. The braxton hicks still persisted. Hmm. After the game ended (Seahawks won! yay!) I asked hubbythat we go to the mall to do some walking.
We spent the afternoon walking and the braxton hicks still persisted. Returned home and I called L & D to ask their opinion. Since I was already past due date and 4 cm dilated along w/ these back-to-back BH's, my OB (who was on call that night) wanted me to come in to be checked. So we went to triage around 9 pm. Was between 4-5 cm dilated, and the monitor showed I was definitely having contractions!
They were painless - that's why I thought they were BH's. OB wanted me to walk around for a couple more hours, see if that brought on the painful 'real' contractions.. after an hour of walking around, oh boy the painful contractions started!! Kept going for another hour, stopping to breathe w/ each contraction. By 11 pm they were 2 mins apart and very INTENSE! Returned to triage, and cervix had progressed to 5-6 cm dilated. Was admitted (at last!) and the contractions were right on top of each other, more and more intense. I decided to accept an epidural and am very grateful I did so! By 2 am I was 8 cm dilated.. then at 4 am OB came to check me again and guess what.. baby was already crowning! I was not in pain at all. At 430 am I started pushing. After her head emerged, she decided to reach out w/ her right hand/arm at the same time.. gave me a nice second degree tear. Agh.Just 5 pushes and Mckenna Brooke was born! 4:35 am on November 26th, 9 lbs 4 oz, 21" long.
OB spent a good 30 minutes stitching me up, lost track of how many stitches. Again thank goodness for the epidural! I didnt feel any of that. *whew*!!!
After being cleaned up, she was already rooting, ready to nurse!!
Going home, all bundled up nice and warm!
