Accidentally got vaccinated with wrong vaccine...

Ok, I don't know if this has ever happened to anyone on here, but yesterday, my SIL took my nephew (two) and my niece (8 1/2 months) to the Dr to get their shots and checkups. Well, the nurse drew up all the shots and took them into the room on one tray (1st mistake) then gave my nephew the DTAP vaccine, the HiB and MCV
(meningitis) He was SUPPOSED to be getting the MCV and Hep A, but never actually got the Hep A. They gave him two vaccines that he has already had, that were supposed to be given to his sister. They caught it because the stupid nurse was about to give my niece the Hep A shot, which would have been bad.

In nursing school, they tell us to triple check everything and also to use one tray with the shots on it for each person, not put them all on the same tray. Anyway, I hope she was fired.

Well, the Dr came in and was trying to tell my sil that it was "not that big of a deal" but they have gone and talked to some other doctors and the other doctors are worried about what might happen in the future- not the present. So they may be taking legal action.

I'm so upset right now- as a nurse, although not practicing, and as the aunt to two beautiful kids. I hope and pray that nothing goes wrong in the future for my nephew.

Has this happened to anyone and if so, where there problems later on?

Wow I hope she gets fired too!!! No this has never happened to me or anyone else that I know!!

I knew someone who that happened to 25 years ago (friends of my mom).

Your SIL has a great lawsuit on her hands.

Never happened to me or anyone I know. That is horrible!! Negligent behavior on the nurses part. I hope everything turns out ok for your nephew and niece.

I'm a nurse and I would have freakin' died on the spot if I ever made an error like that... and on a child! Wow...

check when you get it out, check when you draw it up and check when you put it away that it is the right one.

I never got mixed up with the shots but meds I have I was to be on some type of blood pressure stuff and my doctor at the time wrote down a differnt meds ( she wasnt really paying attention to what she wrote) and I recieved adhd meds. Which did nothing to me but the medicine was tottally difernt to what I was to get.

The mom I know who it happened to had two children, a newborn and a toddler. The toddler was supposed to get the MMR, but they gave it to the newborn instead. The nurse was fired on the spot.

Mistakes happen, especially in the medical field. If your SIL signed that waiver before her kids got the vaccine, I don't think she can do anything about it. Especially if the boy (lets hope so) doesn't get sick from it.

Wow! I would definitely be taking legal actions, especially since he doctor just brushed it off like it was nothing instead of taking the time to recognize the mistake!

My pedi has smurfed my DD's shots up soo many times, this last time he gave her one of her 4 year boosters... at 15 months old!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. I would die. The MMR isn't even approved for newborns. The baby was ok though.
