re: Tandem nursing and nursing through pregnancy chat

posted 7th Jan
So, I'm 12 weeks today & it seems my nipples are getting MORE sore   I usually sleep through her night nursing- but last night it was so irritating that I couldn't   Her 1 year molars are coming in (all but one ate completely in) so maybe its that her latch is adjusting... gotta say, I'm excited about nursing a baby WITHOUT teeth again lol

dream- congrats on 8 months tandem! Glad to see ya back on bg

My dd just turned 2 on Friday and I will be 23 weeks tomorrow with her little brother. She was a vey frequent nurser until my about 8-12 weeks into this pregnancy when it was getting really uncomfortable and I know i was experience some very real aversion to nursing altogether. I know that I was unintentionally delaying her nursing sessions and trying to distract her when she asked and now she's almost completely weaned but I don't want her to be. I feel so bad. I have started offering the breast more often and when she was sick a few weeks ago I slept topless son's he could nurse of she wanted through the night, hoping she would take advantage and it would help her feel better. She nursed almost non stop that night but has gone back to just being disinterested again. She has gone three days now without even latching on at bedtime.
How common is it for an older toddler, 2-2 1/2, to pick nursing back up when a new baby arrives and the milk comes in? I would like for her to continue nursing a little longer just because I really think it will help her adjust when the baby arrives and it keeps her so healthy. Do you ladies think there is a good chance she will take up nursing regularly again when the milk is plentiful??

absolutely!!!!!!!! My little girl was only nursing once a day when I was pregnant, and after baby she nurses WAY more often than I would like...like 5-8 times a day!!!!!!!!! Ugh I hate it. I feel like I am just planted on the couch nursing all day. I hope it passes soon. Im glad she is getting good milk and my antibodies but it is very exhausting.

Right now dd goes a few days at a time without even asking to nurse. She even said no thanks when I offered it tonight before bed. I'm hoping she goes back to wanting it at least once in a while.

LO started nursing again yesterday (delivered sat night).

Do I need to watch who nurses first until my milk fully comes in?

I always either made sure my baby nursed first or I'd only let DD nurse on one side if she wanted to nurse and my baby would want to be eating soon.

I hate the hospital and I hate everyone here. They are being such smurfs to me about tandem nursing, I'm just not going to tell anyone else I want to do it.
My son is almost 3, he stopped when I was about 3 months pregnant because my milk dried up. I'm 6. Months pregnant now and he still asks to breastfeed all the time but knows there's nothing there until the baby comes. Well, I just started leaking colostrum within the last week and. Did want to start him again once this happened but since I'm in the hospital on bed rest because my water broke I don't want him to start again and possibly cause contractions/ throw me into labor so he's now going to have to wait.
I told 2 nurses and 1 doctor I want to tandem and maybe even my son will help keep my supply up when the baby's in the NICU and not able to breastfeed yet. They were giving me so much smurf about how the baby needs it more and a 3 yr old doesn't need to be breastfeeding etc etc, attitude and everything. Ummmm you're maternity and lactation nurses and you don't understand the concept of stimulating and making even MORE? He would most likely be breastfeeding 2 times a day at most and only for a few minutes anyway. They told me to pump every 3 hours but I'm going to pump every 1 1/2. I really don't see the issue. They think he's going to drink alll the babys colostrum! I've had bad luck with pumping in the past and I don't want to lose my supply. It's so ridiculous that I have to hide my breastfeeding intentions from them.

They are misinformed and that is really sad  . I keep all unnecessary info to myself, healthcare professionals pass their opinions off as fact more often than they should.

Good luck mama, I hope you are holding up alright.

Wow I'm sorry they being so awful. Just ignore them and do what you were planning, you're obviously more informed than the professionals, which is really sad to me. I plan to let my toddler nurse when the baby arrives to help my supply and my doctor said that it's a great idea since a toddler has a much stronger suck and much greater capacity for initiating let downs, which is, as you know, how you let your body know to make the milk! I think you're so strong and you'll do great when credence gets here.
Although, I hope he stays put for a food long while still. What level NICU is the hospital you're in. I'm delivering a umass memorial in Worcester.

Level 3. It's the hospital that they transfer all the NICU babies in the area to so at least I'm already here.
I heard the one you're delivering at is supposed to be amazing for NICU too.

AND after my emotional vent earlier one of the lactation consultants that works for the hospital FINALLY called me! She was so nice and completely agreed with me about having my son breasfteed a few times a day to help my supply and said it was so awesome that I made it so far and wanted to tandem. Whew! She also reassured me that the NICU doctors are extremely pro breastfeeding(I've been here a week, posssibly could go into labor or have to deliver by emergency any minute of any day and still haven't gotten to talk to a NICU doctor  ) and will try as hard as possible to never have to give a bottle, basically the only reason they will is if they run out of pumped colostrum or milk or if my milk doesn't come in right because of only pumping and the baby has low blood sugar and needs the actual milk. She said they will also do everything they can to help him get latched no matter how early he is but most can't until around 34-35 weeks so if he comes earlier he will be fed by a tube and as soon as he's ready to start sucking and swallowing they will help me get him latched in every way they can.

Oh that's great that they are going to be so encouraging about nursing, bu it's stick is it took so much frustration to get that support. Do they have a time line for when you will get to talk to a NICU doctor?

And yeah umass memorial has a fantastic NICU.

Nope I have no idea. Several doctors have put it an order for them to come talk to me and one of the nurses went so far as to call them right in front of me and tell them I've been waiting for a week. Still nobody.
