re: Tandem nursing and nursing through pregnancy chat

DS keeps biting me hard, the second he latches on. He bites, then he latches. I have been basically...yelping extremely loud (lol, involuntarily but it sure scares him) and putting him down and trying again. But no matter what, he bites. It's like he's forgotten how to latch without biting in the last two days.

I JUST got over a terrible infection and I really don't want another one  . What else can I do?

He's 6 months. Maybe I should ask in the bfing thread too but I figure you'll have the same suggestions here.

ouch. that's a tough age as his comprehension skills are limited. maybe work on a better latch? getting more of your areola in? How long has this been happening? you could maybe try a nipple shield?? that might make the bite less painful maybe.

Just since yesterday morning. I think he is teething again but it's not one of those things I can just deal with for the time being, haha.

Maybe I will try a shield...although most of me doubts he'll take it because he's old enough to know the difference haha. But anything is worth a shot.

I'll try getting more in his mouth too...although that sounds terrifying at the moment, haha, if I come back down one nipple we'll all know why.

maybe if you use the shield, he won't like it and will do better with the real thing.

maybe you could give him something to teeth on/bite on first? frozen washcloth or cold teething ring?

Lol the "could be worse method." That's a good thought. I will try all of the above.

maybe you could also do something like stick your finger in there WITH your nipple for the first bite and then pull it (your finger) out and see if he latches on. That way it saves your nipple a bit and if he doesn't have teeth yet, it shouldn't hurt your finger too bad. hopefully.

He has four teeth   lol. The last time I fed him, I made him root around over my shirt for like thirty seconds and that worked because he was desperate then I think. But I don't know if that was a fluke. I just did that while I mentally prepared to be bitten, lol.

oh darn. well maybe the shirt thing will work again or maybe you could put your finger in the side where they aren't any teeth yet. Finn didn't get his first one until he was 8m old, so I'm hoping for the same for Leo.

Ugh cant figure out this new fangled site.

That is a good idea

And I agree, there is no advantage to early teeth, lol. Arri got them early too. She had nine by her first birthday and all 20 by 26 months. The only positive is it's done now, lol.

Just wondering...

For those whose toddler's were down to nursing only before & after nap and bedtime--did yours start waking to nurse as you approached your due date? I'm due in 9 days and a few nights ago he started waking to nurse in the middle of the night. (We also co-sleep) Last night he woke up 4 or 5 times and cried when I told him he'd have to wait until morning.

Also did they want to nurse when the baby did at night?

She did do that actually...I just said we will nurse in the morning. And she never wakes up when my baby does so it didn't seem to increase at all when he came home.

I got down to nursing for naps and down for bedtime just before I gave birth to #2. Then I was in the hospital for a week to have the baby (required stay here) and he only nursed once a day when he visited me in the hospital. Since I came back home, I still nurse him down for naps, but not for bedtime and he (for the most part) sleeps through the night and does not ask to nurse again until morning.

At first, he wanted to nurse A LOT and I tried to let him, but eventually I got him back down to a few times a day. The little one is 3.5m old now and the big one wants to nurse more again, but I still don't nurse him down for bedtime or in the middle of the night, only for naps (and other times during the day).

We co-slept with Finn until the baby was born and then when Leo was 1m old, we moved Finn on to his own mattress on the floor by our bed. He took to it really well. We had tried it a few times before, but it never worked. Leo sleeps in his travel crib, also in our bedroom and nurses in bed with me during the night once or twice. Finn gets into bed with us some time in the morning.
