passing out!

posted 18th Nov
Yesterday when I was at work, I was standing up looking at the computer and all the sudden I got really light headed and started seeing black spots in my vision. At this point, I have no recollection of what happen and was informed by my boss, my face got bright red and my eyes glazed over and I passed out, she caught me and set me on the floor thankfully. About 15 seconds later I woke up and was completely fine. Today at work, I started to feel the same symptoms so I immediately sat down and the feeling passed. I am 17+ weeks and have never felt this way before. My mom told me to take iron vitamins and call my doctor on Monday. In"What to ExpectWhen You're Expecting" it saysfeeling lightheaded/dizzy is not uncommon and sometimes fainting doesoccur and could be a sign of anemia, howevernot to worry becausealthough oxygen istemporarily cut offto the brain, it does not cut off thebaby's oxygen and I should be fine.Does anyone know what this could possibly be, and if I should be worried? I'm really nervous about it!

I also have this problem and have had to quit work because of it. I have gotten so dizzy my head was spining and i was sitting down!!! I would just drink water and try to stay away from sweets yeah right i know lol but this does help me alot. My bp is usually too low and thats my problem.

I was having the same problems and when I went in for blood work I found out I'm really really low on iron I have to take 2 iron pills a day to even out, I would try taking some iron pills but make sure you take them at a different time of day than your pre-natal and take them with food!! Good luck and call your doctor too!

Thank you! I am definitely going to call my doctor tomorrow morning, I just got some iron pills tonight 28 mg. I did take them with my prenatals at dinner but I will remember to take them in the morning from now on! Thank you so much!

I really hope I don't have to end up quitting. Yesterday was actually my first day. How embarrassing to pass out on your first day right? LOL What a first impression. Luckily my boss was totally cool about it and told me a story about how her best friend passed out the entire time she was pregnant. I'm glad I'm not the only one going thru this though! My bp was normal at my last appt. on 11/14 but I'm going to call my doc. in the morning. Thanks for your advice!

I had a very similar experience at 27 weeks - I passed out at work.  Since I work in law enforcement they didnt hesitate to call an ambulence... my blood pressure was low.  I went to L&D and was having contractions every 1-3 minutes but I wasnt even feeling them.  I had to have a shot of some muscle relaxer to stop the contractions, and an IV and constant monitoring and they did a fFN test to determine if the baby was going to be born soon (the test checks within 2 weeks).  I was released after about 8 hours.  Luckily the fFN was negative.  They still dont know for certain what caused it, but they think it was dehydration (and I was drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day --- I had to increase it a LOT for the rest of the pregnancy!).  They didnt put me on bedrest or anything, but did put me on light-duty at work because they didnt want me to overexert myself or even stand for periods of time.  I would call the doc asap - he may want to see you... I dont mean to freak you out, but I'd rather be safe!

***and - i am pretty sure you need to be careful about your iron intake - I could be thinking about something else, but I think when I asked about iron supplements they told me not to, that I would be getting enough from the pre-natals.  just make sure that extra iron wont harm you or baby.  I'm sure you could google it or call the doc/hospital***

Good luck hun!

unfortunately I quit work for this reason too... I never passed out but would get really close (it happens a lot to women in areas where air is recycled like grocery stores) but could be from a number of things... heat.. area not well ventilated.. BP fluctuations (unpreventable in pregnancy)... uncontrolled blood sugar levels (spike and drop or too low from not eating), or anemia. They can do the anemia/Gestational Diabetes test a little early if need be (you probably should have it done by now anyhow). For me .. I failed the GD screening but passed the test and was slightly anemic but even AFTER the iron I still got faint feeling from time to time. If I wasn't taking subways and whatnot all day since I worked in NYC I probably would have kept working but for me it just wasn't safe AND it was really hot and I was donig a lot of walking so I quit at 7 months or so.. make sure to let your doc know and good luck!!!! this CAN be very normal.. it happens A LOT to women who are pregnant but def have it checked out

Thank you for your insight. I was also worried about the extra iron intake but my mom said it should be okay until I can get ahold of my doctor. For some reason unknown to myself, I do not have his after hours number! About an hour before I passedout I had really sharp pains in my lower stomach that I figured were round ligament pains, I hope they didn't have anything to do with why I fainted. Now that I think about it though, they hurt pretty bad. They also happened today before I noticed I was feeling woozy. I am getting really nervous, I can't wait to talk to my doc tomorrow!

Thank you!! I hope I don't have to quit work, I just started yesterday! I've been out of work for the entire time I've been pregnant. It is so hard to get a job when you are pregnant! I swear people are so judgemental, like because I'm pregnant I don't have a good work ethic. UGH!

oh .. try and eat every few hours .. to keep your levels from spiking and dropping (if it's sugar related).. this helped me.. I found as annoying as it was that I had to eat SOMETHING every 3 hours or so.. even a few pieces of fruit or something.

I will try that. I was thinking maybe because it's the first day I haven't ate every hour that might have been the reason. Usually, if I am just sitting at home I am munching on something every few hours. I am especially fond of pineapple lately! Hopefully it's nothing too serious, I am having my gender ultrasound on Wednesday - I can't wait to make sure my baby is doing okay!
