Potty training boys. AHHHHHH!!!

posted 18th Nov '07
Okay, so we've begun the potty training process and so far it's going pretty well. Except we can't get Tiernan to hold his penis down when he pees and things get wet. I'm pretty sure that at his preschool, the boys go standing up, but his potty chair is too small for that, and I'm afraid of him falling off a step-stool into the big toilet. Any advice for making that transition at home, or at least alleviating some of the wetness of having him go sitting down?

Also, has anyone had issues with their son pooping on the floor while urinating into the toilet standing up? We haven't experienced this (yet), but I've heard of it happening.

Thanks.

I have never had my kids poop on the floor while peeing

Boys are careless pee-ers....mine would pee everywhere. I had to remind them constantly to hold their penis down while pottying. One thing that worked for me was to remind them that if they hit the water and peed....they made bubbles. My boys always watched to make sure their pee went into the potty to make those bubbles and worked for a while.

Now, at 12 and 10, I still clean their bathroom....alot....boys will be boys!

Ohhhhhhh.... Tiernan LOVES bubbles. That might be the ticket! Geez, you know you're a parent when the idea of bubbles in the toilet sounds genius. Oy.

Hehe...I know the feeling! Just wait...having a girl will be so much different! Tho, she was harder to potty train than my boys!

Good luck! He'll get it....when he's 27...lol

Another thing you could try is putting a square of toilet paper in the toilet you want him to go potty in... Tell him if he hits it he'll sink it likea sunken ship.

Another thing that might be a little more work is putting a cheerio or two in there as well. Same concept just a little harder for him to hit.

I think the toilet paper square is the route I'll go if I have a boy, just because its right there in the bathroom and handy.

Good luck.

Thanks, girls!

We're going to break out the Froot Loops for target practice. Right now I'm just trying to get him to not pee all over the place when he's sitting down.

It's normal for boys to sit down and go potty to, I see alot of little boys do it sometimes up until they are 4. Granted they go bach in forth of sitting down and standing up. Have you tried a potty seat that sits on the toilet? Also that might be a good way of him making both # 1 and # 2 in the toilet.

Just keep reminding him, Mama...he'll get it.....I know I have to be reminded of things more than once!

He does have a potty seat insert for the big toilet, and we've been using that most of the time lately. He still sprays everywhere, as that has less protection than the seat on his potty chair.

Thanks, Sodypop Girl. I'm patient, but it's hard to clean his pee off the floor and the toilet with only 5weeks or so left in this pregnancy!

you said you do have a potty seat that sits on the big toilet? does it not have a shield on it??? Mine was only like 8 bucks at wal-mart & it had a shield, so when myson misses, it never gets on the floor, it just hits the shield. We havent started the standing up while peeing yet. I think it would be too hard for him to learn to aim, potty and all that all at once you know? so he sits down for now.

We have a potty chair that has a sheild on it for little boys. We are teaching my son to pee sitting down right now, because my SIL taught her son to pee standing up and it took him forever to learn to poop in the potty, he would just poop on the floor while he was standing up!

The shield on both his potty seat and the potty chair seem to be pretty worthless. His penis goes straight up in the air when he pees. The shield on the potty chair (The Comfy Cushy for a Happy Tushy potty by... um... I think it's Safety 1st) is larger than the one on the insert, but neither one works. He does push everything down into the toilet, but once he starts to pee, it goes straight up and sprays everywhere. I try hard not to laugh sometimes because I'm just so tired and I have to laugh to avoid killing myself. LOL Gotta love it. Thank God this baby is a girl!
