Bathing at six months

posted 16th Nov '07
My little one is six months old and I'm having a hard time transitioning from her bathtub with a hammock to an "older baby's" tub. Today was a disaster when I removed the hammock (which she barely fits in anymore). She can sit up on her own but I have a hard time holding her with one hand and bathing her with the other. She leans forward, therefore water (and soap/shampoo) runs down into her face. Also she tries to put her soapy hands into her mouth. What do I do? I love the hammock idea because she is contained and I can bathe and rinse her easily. I don't want to bathe her in the kitchen sink and I'm afraid to put her in our master tub which seems way too big and dangerous.

Do you ladies have any recommendations on a method that works best for a baby this age?

Thanks so much!

Try bathing her in the kitchen sink...it saves your back and you can also keep her from moving too much, etc, etc....always worked for me

I never liked the hammock thing very much anyways, but now that he's too big for it I do miss it! I guess the only advice I have is to try the kitchen sink again. That's what I'll probably end up doing.

When she was 6 mos I would put her on a towel in the my master bath tub. No baby tub and justa tiny bit of water. We also had this and loved it. It is just like the hammock but can fit a bigger baby. she is 11 mos and can still fit in it.

BRU has this lil seat that suctions to the bath by cups. We just got in the tub with Elliot. we had alot of fun taking baths with him. He's now 3 and his daddy still gets in the tub with him.

I don't have a problem with Emily in her tub. I just use one hand to hold her and wash with the other. She also likes to suck on her hands in the bath as well as the washcloth. Most baby shampoos should be tearless, so don't worry about your baby getting the stuff in its eyes. As for ingesting the stuff... Em hasn't had a problem - its not as if she just eats it or anything but she does suck some bath soap off of her hands. I am sure that the makers of all of these awesome baby bath products make them non-toxic because all babies are going to eat some at one time or another.

When my daughter was able to sit up on her own we used one of those little blue chair things that had suction cups on the bottom of it and you put it in the big tub? It kept her from leaning and I didn't have to worry about her slipping.
Here isa link to what it is.

We have the euro bath, which has 2 sides--1 for 0-6, and one for 6 up. Only used the lying doen side, so far, but the sitting side also is molded to keep 'em in place. Here's a link--

Addie can't sit up on her own as of yet....but we figured that we would use her bumbo chair for when she was transitioning. That way she can sit on her own and there is a higher back so that I can still get around to washing her without feeling like she might slip around too much.

Once Colin got too big for his baby tub, I just started taking him into the bathtub with me, holding him with one arm and washing him with the other.

Now that he's 10 months he just sits at the other end of the tub from me, hehe.

for a little while, zoë was in a bathing seat (mentioned by a previous poster) that we got from target.

now, she takes baths in the big tub, in about 3-4 inches of water, and seems to like it just fine. for a long time, i was putting her infant bath tub in the big tub, so she could get used to bathing in the big tub.

oh. and for the poster who mentioned the bumbo, i don't have one... but from what my friends who do own them have told me, they float.

so i don't think the bumbo would work so well.

as much as it's tricky doing the bathing thing at that age, she'll grow very quickly. at least it's only a very short window of time to have to deal with the hassle.

Thanks for your reply. My mom always bathed me in the kitchen sink and I know so many people do but I'm nervous about her peeing or pooping (which she's done a few times before in the tub). I cook a lot and use my sink so much, it just doesn't seem right. Also I'm concerned for her about anything that could be lurking (bacteria) that I might have missed when cleaning the sink. This bathing thing shouldn't be such a big deal, I'll have to figure out something though soon.

Oh thank you! I'm headed to Babies R Us today and will look for this. This is more along the lines of what I'd like to use.

my little girl is only 3 weeks, and i dotn see why this wouldnt work for older babies too, but i take her in the bath with me, and i sit with my legs bent and sit her on my tummy so shes resting onto my thighs, which keeps her in water, but supported. then i have both hands

i think it's kind of gross for them to be in the kitchen sink also considering my mom washes vegies and stuff in there
