I don't have an umlaut button, but in school my teacher just told us to add an e after whatever letter had the umlaut

oh yes, you can do that too, but I think it makes the words look funny. I definitely prefer the umlauts. I don't have umlauts on my laptop because it's a US one, so I have to copy and paste them all unless I get on my hubby's computer which is a standard Austrian/German one. =D
