We are not doctors...

posted 15th Nov
Public Service Announcement.

Dear ladies of baby-gaga:

I understand that you have questions. We all do. However, some of them are better left to your doctor, and not to us, because we are not doctors.

When to start your child on solids is one of those questions.

This is one of those things that is highly individual, and what another mother has done is likely irrelevant to your specific situation. We cannot tell you when to start your child on solids, because we do not know your medical history, we do not know your child's medical history, we do not know what allergies are in your family, we do not know if your child is showing signs of being ready to eat solids. Your doctor however, will know all of these things.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask when others started their children on solids so that you can have a relative idea in your mind, but please do not keep asking if we think it is OK for you to start your child on solids. This is just not advice that we are qualified to give. Experts recommend waiting until 4-6 months, and provide their reasonings for saying so. The information is out there. You do not have to follow it, but please talk to your doctor before you decide to start your child on solids. Some women telling you on a message board that it is OK is really not the route you want to be taking with this.

no offense, but everytime I get on here I see a public service announcment from you. Let people do what they want and ask what they want. That is why this is a message board. I am sure that they are only asking to get other peoples opinions on their personal experiences. Which again why this is a message board. Don't be so mean. I always liked reading your posts but this is a little ridiculous.

I understand people ask the same things over and over and sometimes they are pretty umm either self-explanatory or something that you need to ask a professional.

But no matter how many of these you post, people will still post the "can my 2 month old eat solids?" or "can I put cereal in my newborn's bottle?", etc.

Most of these questions come from the fact that these womens mothers are giving them the information and well lets face it when we were kids things were MUCH different than they are now. So instead of posting these PSA's you could just do as I do and ignore them. Someone always replies to their posts telling them to ask a doctor anyways.

Kinda feeling the same way...you may discourage young mothers to not even feel comfortable asking anything here because you're making them feel stupid.

i sort of agree with the other responses. I get kind of annoyed seeing the same questions that every mom needs to talk to their doc's about, BUT in their defense...
If they were just CURIOUS and it's not an issue serious enough to call the doctor about and they don't feel like waiting until their next appt to ask, I can understand why these moms are curious. For example, I just posted that my daughters temperature is 99.3, and I KNOW it's not serious enough to call the doctor for, and I know that I've been told to call if it reaches 100.4, but I'm curious what's considered a fever? It's not urgent enough to call the doctor over, I was just wondering...
Anyway, sorry I'm kind of rambling. But I agree with Brooke. As long as the question isn't an emergency issue like "My child stopped breathing what should i do?" which OBVIOUSLY requires a doctors attention, moms should feel comfortable asking any kind of question here.

I also go to a differant board and it gets asked there to. It something everyone asks. And really you putting these up will make people not want to ask anything. Before my daughter started solids I asked when people started (on the other board) Today I asked when they started whole milk on their kids? advice on food I dont listen to my pedi anyways because im with my daughter and I know what can handle or cant handle. I was told to start cereal at 3 mos (by her pedi)I did not feel that was a good age I started later.. Let people ask what they want.

People post topics becaues they want opinions or just don't know because their doctor says one thing and their mother/husband or whoever says another. For whatever reason it may be they want our opinions/advice. Doctors are not ALWAYS right. They are not just posting these topics to piss you off.

If it bothers you that much to make a topic just to complain about it then don't open the posts on solid foods and having sex after a baby. Usually when it's about solid or sex the topics are pretty clear and understanding of what their question is regarding. Nobody is forcing you to read or respond to any post.

Can't do that, because it would clutter up the forums. BUT THERE IS A SEARCH BUTTON and no one knows how to utilize it, it seems.

sorry but its still gonna happen and there is nothing that any post can do about it. So like everyone said if you dont like it dont read it. And if no one responds then it will get buried but then who cares? But people respond to them still so let it be.
