Chromosome 22 Duplication

posted 23rd Aug '10
My mother is adopting a little girl that was sexually abused at 8 months old. She is now a little over 3 and has had delayment with speaking, and motor skills. The testing results showed she was Chromosome 22q Duplication, and I am just wanting to learn more to know better what she will have to deal with. I know I never want to hear a soul call this baby stupid because she is very smart.

Hello, I want to give you good news about the delay due to 22q duplication. I have a larger chromosome 22 that I probably inherited from my mum. I grew up very slowly although I started walking early and I learned reading and writing before school. I have a cousin who started speaking at 5 and another one with hypospadia, but all of us smart - I have a Master of Science. My health is excellent, too and I am very resistant to infections; perhaps my slow growth is even beneficial because I am 50 and look less than 40 :-) The only drawback in our family is that we have a high rate of breast cancer, this could be related to chromosome 22 but we are not sure. All that given, if you care for the child until she fully develops her immune system and later to check her for breast symptoms, I wish and hope her a very long and happy life. Merry Christmas and happy New Year --- hopefully, the first of many more to come :-) Van, from Italy
