extreme ankle/foot swelling after giving birth?

posted 14th Aug '10
I had my daughter two days ago, and today my right ankle, foot, and toes are SO swollen, it looks horrible. When I walk I can literally feel the fluid squishing around...i never swelled like this during my pregnancy, and I can't remember swelling like this after giving birth to my boys. Anyone else experience this? my other foot is completely normal, not swollen one bit.

also, I've tried keeping my foot elevated as much as possible today, and it hasn't helped at all. I'm also drinking PLENTY of fluids, so i know that's not it.

I know i swelled up and they told me it was because of the IV fluids.

Yup, I swelled like that after both kids. It's normal, it should be back to normal in a few days. Just keep doing what you're doing. Stay off your feet, plenty of water (which is important anyway if you're BF), and put your feet up when you can.

I was JUST looking at my pics from my feet after I had cj!!!! My whole legs swelled up! It hurt so bad! It's normal. I was on fluid for 3 days, so it was just bad! It will go away. Drink water and feet up. It will go away on it's own.

I had swelling like that after my last birth, they said it was from the IV fluid- I was induced, so I was on the IV fluids overnight. They did tell me to try not to bend my legs when I was laying down, though, b/c you're at a greater risk of getting a blood clot. Other than that, just try and keep them up (not bent) and drink a ton of water!

its super normal for hospital births. Did they run IV fluid for you? Thats what does it. I was going to turn down the IV fluid until they told me I was so dehydrated they couldn't give me an epi   They had to have the anesthesiologist come in and do it, the nurse stuck me 3 times and couldn't do it. I was super swollen after my c section (my first. So swollen i felt like i was walking with a pillow between my legs) and with my second too, which was a vaginal delivery. They ran more fluid and I was in bed a lot longer for my c section so thats what I think is to blame for the WORSE swelling.   You need to get out and walk. Don't over do it, you just gave birth! but don't stay in bed all day. You should be fine pushing a stroller, go for a walk, or take the LO to costco to walk all around, or walmart
