Period vs. Lochia. What's the difference?!

posted 7th Aug '10
So I'm almost six weeks PP, and I'm exclusively breast feeding my daughter. I would like to know if my period has started at some point yet. At 8days PP, an ER doctor told me I had gotten my period (which I'm sure is NOT true..) and then around 4weeks PP, my bleeding stopped completely, but then came back a few days later, only this time it was light and brown in colour. I don't get my PP check up until 8weeks PP, but the curiosity is killing me!

So my question is, how do you know the difference between PP bleeding and your period?

TIA!!

Good question ... but I BF my son and he's 11 months old and I still haven't had a period.

I am not sure I am guessing your period is lighter than the pp bleeding(lochia).

I always read that anything new/red after 40 days pp was your period. But idk. I just stopped my pp bleeding around 5 weeks pp and haven't had anything return so I'm hoping it doesn't!

The lochia I always thought wasn't red, it was that weird brown/creamy color. I am 4.5 PP breastfeeding with no period still

I have the same problem too but I am only 3 weeks pp. I think the difference is the color and symptoms. I had no symptoms with lochia, just pink and brown on and off for a couple weeks. I didnt have a break in between lochia and what I now believe is my period. Earlier this week it turned bright red, its more of it, and im cramping along with other things that come along with my period. I can tell the difference and if it seems like you old period is coming back full force, most likely it probably is   Good Luck!

i am also 3 weeks and all of a sudden today its like it turned bright red...very different from the color and consistency of the lochia I have been having the last 3 weeks
