The Fix List - problems with site? Check them here.

posted 3rd Nov '07
I'm keeping a list of observed problems for the site here. If you've noticed a glitch, bug, annoying issue, error, etc. please check this list, and if it's not on here, post it below and I will add it.

Also, please know that many of the bugs below are reported by non-Firefox users --- see this post for how you can fix most problems immediately.

CANNOT STAY LOGGED IN
  • Some of you are still have problems staying logged in, even with the "log me in automatically" option checked -- I'm cracking down on this next. For anyone experiencing this problem and wants to help out with feedback, please leave a comment here.

  • POLLS
  • todo: allow polls to be edited

  • TOPIC REPLY NOTIFICATIONS
  • need to re-enable email notifications
  • instead of going to the last post in a topic, let members revisit a topic at the point that they last left it

  • The following issues are known for specific browsers. Again, I would recommend firefox for the fastest way to fix these problems...

    KNOWN INTERNET EXPLORER ISSUES
  • In some versions of IE 6 pages do not refresh properly, e.g. after a post you cannot see it, unless you explicity refresh the browser. There's not much I can do about this, except request that you upgrade your browser
  • In IE 7, only the "author" portion in the list of topics will let you click on it to open a new tab. The rest of the link does not seem to give this option.

  • KNOWN SAFARI ISSUES
  • many problems reported with the text editor: I'm hoping most of these are now fixed. Please let me know if there are more.

    Hey,

I posted this in the other forum, but since it's not on the list:

When I try to quote a reply, it doesn't always work. Sometimes, all I can get is the graybox that says "X wrote:" and nothing else.

    Cheers,

    Maggie

    Hey Maggie,

Does this happen randomly, or every time for specific posts? It would be great if you could give me an example post that doesn't quote correctly (you can PM on this if you like).

Sometimes when I post, I have to refresh the page just to see my post. Sometimes twice. And sometimes when I go to check my PM's it will say they aren't read, but I have read them already.

    Jen,

When you post, do you click the "back" button on your browser to return, or click on the one of the links (e.g. "see my post" or "see my changes")? If you click one of the links, it should tell your browser to fetch a new version of the page. I'm guessing you're using Internet Explorer? If so...make sure your Tools -> Internet Options -> (Temporary Files) Settings -> "Check for newer version of Pages" is set to "automatically" or "every visit to a page".

For PM's --- only the PM's in your inbox will be set to "read" when you read them. The PM's in your sent box will only be set to "read" if the recipient reads them. Let me know if your inbox PM's aren't set to read....(that would need to be fixed).

UPDATE: this appears to be a bug in Internet Explorer 6 without the Service Pack 2 upgrade. In the older versions of Internet Explorer they do not refresh pages correctly (i.e. they are overzealous in their caching of pages).

I looked but couldn't find one (I can't remember which posts they were for--but there are a few of my posts that exist like this). When it's happened, it's not random but for a specific post--I've tried it a few times with the same result. When/if it happnes again I'll post an example.

When I use a smile face it comes up as a totally different one once my message is posted...why is this? Ohh and if I want to make the smile the first thing and then write after it, the face wont show up....

Haylees momma re: the smileys issue: this has been fixed, but requires you to refresh the browser for the changes to take effect...your browser needs to clear out the old code...

In future updates I will make it so that updates will refresh in your browser automatically...

Found a new problem--keen. Went to post a new topic with a poll. When I went to post, I got a red outline box with red letters that said

Please use at least 64 characters

I tried several times to post it, but it wouldn't let me. I finally gave up, removed the poll, and was able to post.

Yes, I think that error message was meant to read: "Please enter less than 64 characters" instead of "at least 64 characters". Sorry about that, it's now fixed. The next time you post a poll, your options must be described within 64 characters...if you feel that's too short, we could lengthen it somewhat....

64 characters per line? Or 64 characters total? Because if it's total--well--with a 4 option poll like the one I was posting, it is a problem. Even per line though, sometimes I like long options.

Once i click the bold button in a reply the whole rest of my message is in bold and i can't change any portion of it back. It shows as not bold on the reply but then is bold when it posts.

64 characters per line, so if you have 10 options that's 640 ;)

Admittedly, the text editor is not very good -- I will be working to make it more easy/reliable to use, or replace it with a commercial version. In the meantime, if you want to bold/unbold text you should be able to use CTRL-B to toggle bolding on/off, or you could type your message first, and then highlight the text you want to bold and then click the "b" button. Otherwise, if you know a little bit of HTML you can use the "show html" button and edit the <strong> or <b> tags (you can close bold areas with </strong> and </b> with their matching start tags).

I'll have to use the html idea because I've tried the other two and it doesn't work.
