How long was your baby in the NICU?

I had my baby at 29 weeks. So far he is doing sooo well! I know they cant really say when he will be well enough to come home but some people tell me that the baby has to weigh at least 5 lbs and also some say they keep the baby there until what should have been the due date. Mine would have been Dec 21. I really would love to have him home for christmas! would be the best christmas present ever! So my question to you ladies is how long did they keep your baby in the nicu and how early was he/she?

I Had My Daughter At 28 Weeks & 2 Days...She Was There For 1 Month & 3 Weeks

Hello, I had all of my children premature. My oldest was born at 34 weeks and stayed in the NICU for a couple of days. My second oldest was born at 31 weeks and was in the NICU for almost a month. My third was also born at 31 weeks and stayed in the NICU for exactly three weeks. The NICU staff told me that weight doesn't matter. They just want the baby to maintain their temperature, eat at all feedings, and gain weight properly. If you want to talk more let me know.

My son was in the Nicu for alittle over 3 months..he is doing great now..he will be 3 in july and just a whole lot of fun...he is doing great..i hope everything goes great with ur little one..

My daughter was born at 33 weeks. She was born May 28. She was due July 15th. And she came home June 14th.
It all really just depends on how well they are doing. They have to learn to suck, swallow, and breathe on their own.
Our NICU told us that they don't do it based on weight anymore. It used to be that way. It's not all about them being 5 lbs. There's other issues that have to be addressed and if they are doing all those things well then they will be able to come home!

My baby boy was born at 30.5wks. He came home last friday after a 3wk and 5 day stay in the NICU. Like the other ladies have said he didnt have to weigh 5lbs he weighed 4lbs 7oz. Just as long as he can eat all his feedings by bottle and be gaining weight and has no other problems then he should come home before your due date like Michael did for me. My baby Mari was born at 33 weeks and stayed in the NICU for ten days. since then shes been readmitted to the hospital twice.

My boys were born at 33.6weeks. They weighed 4 lbs, and 4 lbs. 7oz..they were in NICU for 10 days.

Devon was born 27 weeks and 5 days weighting 2 pounds 3 ounces and spent 61 days in the NICU.

My sister had her son at 26 almost 27 weeks and they keep him there until aweek before his due date. The doctor told her that they almost always keep them until right around the due date unless they are doing amazing.

My nephew was born at 26 weeks. He spent 6 months in the NICU then after he came home he spend another 6 months on Oxygen.
My sister lived about 2 hours away from ANY hospital way out in the country so I think they were hesistant to let him go home.
He is doing great now though!

I had my son at 33 weeks and 6 days and he was bornoct 6 and came home oct 15

My Talia was born at 27+4, she spent 85 days in hospital and came home 2 days before her due date.
Usually they require babies to be gaining weight well and taking suck feeds (breast or bottle) well enough. Depending on the parents' confidence the baby may be able to go home on tube feeds and suck feeds in a 4:4 ratio, alternating between tube and suck feeds.
They need to be having no apnoeas or bradies or tachies.
They can go home on oxygen. They can go home on some medications and supplements.
I vaguely recall one other requirement but I forget it now.
My baby girl came off her oxygen about 4 days before coming home. And 2 days before coming home she ripped out her NG tube again so we decided to see how she'd cope on full suck feeds. She was fully breastfed from about day 2 at home and has remained so since. Keep at expressing if you can, it's so worth it. She also came home on an iron supplement and pentavite.

I had my twins at 33.2 weeks and they stayed for three and five weeks. We had problems learning the suck swallow breath thing. They are now eight weeks and doing great. Just take things one day at a time. Hang in there!!
