spacing shots???

posted 30th Oct '07
Hello im new on here.  My son just turned 2months old and he gets his first shots This Friday.   Im so nervous. After all the reasurch ive done i didn't want to get the shots but i find that its what is best for my son and i want the best for him.  I am a first time parent so i worry over everything.  I have decided to space his shots though.   Im looking for advice on how to go about doing this.  I will talk to his ped tomorrow hopefuly.  But i was wondering has anyone out there spaced there childs shots and what was the schedule they followed.  Any advice is welcomed about shots cuz im still researching but have to make a firm decision soon.      Thank you

Scarlett is spacing her shots too. Her pediatrician recommended doing half the shots typically given and then going back 2-3 weeks later to finish so she's still on schedule. She didn't get her Hep B shot (the one they usually give in the hospital) until her 2 week check up, then at her 2 month appt she got 3 shots and then 3 weeks later got 2 more. We'll be doing all of her shots like that. So far she's handled getting shots very well.

Thanks someone told me to space them one at a time but it seems a long time but im taking everything into consideration.  Any detailed schedule is good so i can maybe show it to his ped.  Also any good websites that suggest this i can never find any that arent too complicated and all.     And how to check for mercury can i ask the doc to see the boxes and all.   Like i said im a new parent so its all new to me   Thanks again

I THINK this is how it went for Scarlett:

2 weeks - Hep B

2 months - DTaP, Rotavirus (oral vaccine, not a shot), and one other one - I don't remember, sorry....

And then 2 weeks later she got her Pneumococcal Conjugate vaccine, and another Hep B.

If you talk to your doctor about it I'm sure they have alternate scheduling available, Scarlett's pediatrician was very willing to work with us as long as we got her vaccines. He told us that most of the diseases we vaccinate against are most dangerous if contracted within the first 18 months of life so  he wanted her to stay on schedule, but we could spread them out pretty much anyway we wanted as long as she got all the ones she was supposed to get by 18 months. Hope this helps a little.

I never knew you could do this....I always thought you just went by the doctor's schedule.  Why do this spacing schedule???  Does it lessen the chance of reaction or something?  Just curious, it sounds neat though.

A lot of people are concerned that kids who are being diagnosed with autism, ACTUALLY have mercury poisoning from mercury in vaccines. The symptoms of autism and the symptoms of mercury poisoning are strikingly similar. Now, most doctors will assure you that almost all vaccines have had the mercury taken out, but there was never a recall - they just stopped making vaccines with mercury in them. Since the vaccines werent' recalled all the vaccines they made BEFORE they took out the mercury still had to be used up, and who knows how much they had left over of the "old" type of vaccine. So more and more moms are taking precautions against that now. Spacing out the vaccines still keeps your child protected from the diseases we vaccinate against, but if there IS still mercury in the vaccines it gives your babies body a little less mercury at a time so it's not toxic. At least that's why I do it

Kelsie had her normal shots at 2 months. I am considering spacing the rest out, though. My only issue is insurance...I don't know if they'll pay the visit fees if she has to go 2 or 3 times, rather than just one. Anyone know about that? Also, how can I find out if the specific medicine they're using has mercury in it?

I'm not sure how you can find out about the mercury. I know I heard a way you can go about it but it was before I really was interested in the topic so I didn't really pay attention. I assume you could just ask your doctor, but a lot of people's pediatricians are so pro-vaccines that they'll brush of the question with reassurances that the levels of mercury in vaccines can't harm a child (at least that's what I've heard). I know that there is a way you can find out. Something about asking for the box number that the vaccine came in?? Sorry I don't have more information on that.

HOWEVER... as far as payment goes... I know that for Scarlett I didn't want to have to pay another co-pay for shots she was supposed to get during her last appt, but they actually didn't charge me a co-pay because we saw a nurse, not a doctor. Since it wasn't a check-up and the nurses give the vaccines anyway, we didn't have a need to see the doctor. They told me there was no copay and we haven't been billed for it (at least not yet) so I don't think your insurance would have a problem with it. (We have Aetna HMO).

Oh! But I'm pretty sure that they say Tetnis is the only shot that still contains mercury anymore, and they say it's not as much as before. I believe it, but like I said, who knows if they're still pulling "old" vaccines off the shelf...

I definitely don't believe that's reason not to vaccinate, but I figure we may as well take precautions.

ethans mom - Good luck today! I hope your pediatrician is understanding!! I think most pediatricians are ok with spacing shots, it's when parents don't want to vaccinate at all that pediatricians won't do it (and honestly, I can understand why). Let us know how it goes!

Aiden's mommy - glad we could give you some info

Thanks for it, I didn't know you could do that either. I guess it's a great thing. I really don't wanna risk it.
