No heart beat at 7 weeks....Doc wants to do a D&C ??

posted 27th Oct '07

Ok ladies here goes my story....My hubby and I have been trying to have a baby for over 2 years and we have been on every fertity medication legally given to women! Well a few weeks ago we found out that we were FINALLY pregnant it was confirmed through 4 home test and 2 blood exams. Well to start my doctor has no bed side manners  (but I will get into that later). I went for an ultrasound around week 5 because of some minor spotting (which happen only once) and at that time he said it might end up in a miscarriage (I have not idea why he said that). Well he scheduled me for another ultrasound week 6 and at that time he was not able to see a heart beat so again he said that it might end up in a miscarriage but was able to see 2 sacs which one was larger than the other. And once again scheduled me for another ultrasound the following week--- week 7 and then stated that he still sees no heart beat and that it will be a miscarriage and for me to stop at the front desk to schedule a D&C to " scrape it out" and then start all over on my medication after we do that.... Needless to say I was in shock and was left speechless . I went home and balled my eyes out   . I feel completely fine for 1 I have not been cramping or bleeding or anything honestly I feel fine. Just extremely nervous. I did go for a second opinion with SOMEONE else and they were unable to see the baby in the ultrasound. Oh yeah each and every time I had an ultrasound done it was vaginal. Well what do you ladies think....Please help me !!

I need a peace of mind....I feel like im going crazy !!!

I went from having 2 babies to 0 in a week.....I just don't understand that

Oh I'm so sorry to hear all that.  I can only imagine what you are thinking and going through.  When I was 11 weeks they went to listen for the heartbeat on the doppler, but couldn't pick up one.  So they immediately sent me back for a regular (not vaginal) ultrasound.  As soon as she put it on my stomach she could see the heart beating and then turned the volume on for me to hear.  It was very relieving.  Is there anyway you can ask for just a regular ultrasound?  I know in many cases it's too early to hear it with the doppler.  And possibly see a 3rd OB for a 3rd opinion?

I definately think that you should go for a third opinion. And if all else fails wait and see if you do miscarry and let mother nature take it's course. I hope the best for you.

Go somewhere else... Even if he is right, he is being a Grade A prick
You don't need him stressing you out and treating it like this is nothing. Worry is not good for you right now, you just need competence...
*hugs*

Hi, I am so sorry that you had to go through that and how that doctor treated you was terrible!

I recently went through exactly what you went through, in fact your story is eearily similar to mine. I found out I was pregnant and made an appt to see the doc in two weeks but a few days later, I started spotting and went to the emergency room. They did an US (vaginal like yours) and they said that they didn't see anything wrong and suggested I stay on bed rest until I contact my doctor and have her see me. I saw the doc and they did another vaginal US which showed a heartbeat but since I was still spotting, she wanted me to say on bed rest and see her in a week. During this time I went in and had a few blood tests that showed my HCG levels were dropping so my doc was concerned and ordered another US only this time, it showed that there was no heartbeat and I should've been 8 weeks along and the baby seemed to still be only 6 1/2 weeks gestation which meant that it had not grown over the last few weeks like it should have been. I was shocked and hurt at the same time. My doc was kind and gentile about it. She explained that since there was no heartbeat, a miscarriage was inevitable and that I could wait for it to happen natually or have a D&C to have the pregnancy "tissue" removed. Needless to say, as soon as I got home, I made a B-line for my bed and balled for the rest of the afternoon.

I totally understand what you are going through but honestly, I don't suggest seeing a third doc and having to pay extra money for the same advice and information. I hope that all is well with you. Just to let you know, I had the D&C in June 07 and I just found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant again so getting pregnant after the procedure is possible! Take care and best wishes
