Not going to breastfeed, need advice on formula

posted 19th Oct
I had a breast reduction a few years ago for health reasons. Now for personal reasons, I have decided I do not want to try breastfeeding when my baby is born in a month. I don't feel like less of a mother for this but I've gotten a lot of crap from people about it. (Just wanted to vent that for a minute.)

This is my first baby and I have no clue on formula. What are the different kinds.. I thought it was sort of all the same, now I'm finding out that there's premixed, canisters of powder, instant, etc. I am aware of the brands.. the DHA kind, the soy kind, Similac, Enfamil, etc.

I'm hoping you guys can tell me what is easiest, best, handiest.. the powder, the premix, the instant, or another kind? I understand that baby girl may want a certain kind once she's here but I guess I want educated on it all.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I used the Enfamil Lipil with my son. We just got the cans of powder. He did really well with it. Sometimes it can take a few different kinds until you find one that works best with your baby. The hospital should be able to give you some different samples.

With my daughter I tried several differen kinds until I got to carnation. Spit up and all that stopped,no gas, nothing. She was a happy baby.

I mainly bought powder, but I also bought concentrate from time to time.

We use the powder, mostly b/c once opened a canister of powder doesn't have to be refrigerated. We use Enfamil Gentlease Lipil. We've also used Similac Isomil Advance. Both sit very well on Will's stomach. I suggest that for going out you get a formula dispenser so you can measure out the formula beforehand and then just dump it into bottles or pre measusred water. They're the greatest!

You can get formaula at Sams. The Sams brand is the same as the name brand and also less expensive. We used the Sams brand with both of our kids and will with this one too. They turned out fine. The doctor said there was no difference between the store brand and name brand of formula.

We used Nestle good start..thats what they regularly send out with the new babies and mommies at my hospital. It was very good. It didnt bubble up when mixing it like some of the other formulas (which can be very frustrating, especially to a hungry baby) AND its quite a bit cheaper than some of the other brands.

With my son I used Nestle Good Start.  My daughter could not (or would not) use that formula...and had to use Similac.  They are both good formulas, personally Good Start would have been one I would have preferred for my daughter.  However, they will choose which one they want.  I went through several formula's with my daughter before I found one she would / could take.  If you are looking to use Similac, but want to reduce the cost, Walmart brand formula (Parent's Choice) is the same exact thing.  You can check online with Nestle's (Carnation) web site, Similac, and Enfamil, sign up for their newsletters and every month they will send you a magazine with tips for baby and coupons for formula.  Hope this helps some.  Good luck.

I was the breastfeeding mom.  at 8.5 months with my third child I got PP thyroiditis and it was so high that I was immediately put on thyroid meds to bring it down and heart meds to keep me from having a heart attack.  I was given 24 hours to wean a never bottle fed baby.  UGH  So I turn the corner to formula.  Not all work without upset but I do believe we settled in on Carnation Good Start and or Similac w/iron.  I preferred the dry since it was handy and ready to mix easily with just a bottled of filtered water.  I would strongly suggest NOT using tap water - too much junk in city water.  Otherwise I think as a second best option any of the listed brands will work for you, it really will be a matter of just finding what fits your scheduling, likes and dislikes as well as which the baby will tolerate best.  Sometimes it is nice to have some ready mixed on hand just for the convenience of running out the door in a hurry or a day you may not be feeling just up to par. Picking formula will fall quickly into place for you.  Good luck.

There alot of different kind of formula its only for your baby to determine that because alot a babies can be lactose intolerant and you not know it until after so much of the formula they can't keep it down. Then the pediatrician will tell you the kind of milk to try for her. The best milk is breastmilkthe difference between breastmilk and formula is breastmilk your baby is less likely to be obese, have cervical or breast cancer, high blood pressure, will be smarter than other peers and theres alot of more things you can look it too for the importance of breastmilk.
