Hey i havent had my baby yet but i wanted to know from those that have if they would recommend a manual breast pump and which brand/model? i will be a sahm and wont need to pump often, only if husband takes the baby or something, so i dont want to spend $$$ on an electric one. any advice? thanks.
I would also recommend the Medela Single Deluxe Electric pump. It pumps out milk for me every time. (I tried the Avent manual pump and it sucked! It only worked the first time for me.)
My hospital gave me the Medela manual pump and I liked it a lot. When I started pumping more, I bought the Medela Swing electric pump and love it. I keep the manual pump in my diaper bag so it's nice to have with me to pump him a bottle if I need it and don't have one already or to keep my milk supply going if he takes a bottle rather than nursing I can keep myself on a schedule too.
I got an Evenflo electric pump, and while it works, it doesn't do wonders, I think it was about $60.
Today I had a WIC appointment and I asked if I could borrow an electric pump from them again, and they offered me a Medla harmony hand pump, so I could see if it would do (since they loan pumps for some thing like two weeks at a time normally) and it seems to work better than the electric!
I have also heard a *lot* of good things about the Avent Isis manual breast pump made by Philips, and I know any Avent product I have tried seems very well designed and high quality (I LOVE their sippy cups...it has a nice soft spout, removable handles and you can get them in two sizes) But I think the Isis is about the most consistently high-rated manual pump, and I know I have heard people say it can be better than an electric because you have more control over the suction with a hand pump (as in how fast it goes, how hard it pumps eta.)
Medela is excellent! I have the Pump In Style Advanced but thats because I am a lean mean pumping machine at work - LOL! The set also includes a manual pump which I once used on a road trip - very helpful!
My hospital offered a free manual pump but I didn't need one. I bet you get the same offer (or at least I hope you do).
Good luck!
