Adderall and Pregnancy

Do/have any of you taken adderall and found out you were pregnant? Did you stop taking it, did you keep taking it, and in either case, did you have a successful pregnancy?

First, be prepared for some people to jump down your throat about taking "drugs" at all. I posted something like this a while back and well...not pretty.

In any case, it's not recommended for pregnancy. It's a class C drug and has been shown to increase the chance of a premature birth. With that said, I took Adderall until 20 weeks with my 3rd child (didn't know I was pregnant). He was early, but both of my other children have also been early so I don't think you can blame it on the Adderall. Aside from being early, nothing has been wrong with them. With my other two pregnancies (and with this one) I have taken Adderall sporadically on days that my sanity is extremely important. I've never taken it more than once a week, though.

i was taking it, 30 mg a day of generic non-extended release adderall. when i found out i was pregnant, i cut down to 15 mg a day for 3 days, then on the weekend i stopped completely and haven't taken it since. my pregnancy has been fine so far, except i gain 10 pounds right away. within like a week of stopping it lol.

Oh oops...I needed to add that I never took Adderall at all with my first pregnancy and he was our earliest.

i was told by my psychiatrist that if i become pregnant to notify him immediately so i can be taken off of my medicines, which include adderall.

I was assuming that would probably happen. I figured in that case I'd do my best to ignore the attackers and try to focus on any information in relation to the question. Thanks for your. I was just wondering because I had found out I was pregnant in May, and stopped adderall immediately. A few weeks later though I had miscarried. I tell myself that it could have been ANYTHING because the fact of the matter is crack babies are born everyday...... . I suppose mainly I was looking for some positive advice that others had taken it, even just to the point where they found out they were prgo and stopped, and had a succssful pregnancy. I don't plan to take it during my pregnancy though. I don't think you should take drugs during pregnancy either. However, in relation to other meds, I have had a doctor tell me that depending on the drug, even though it's risky regardless of the drug, if it helps the mother have a better pregnancy, they would recommend it.

My first pregnancy was an "oops" and I was on Adderall. It ended in a M/C... I always think that it happened bc I was on the Adderall.

Ahh ok, this is what I was wondering too. SO they didn't directly say to get off of it first. I take it sometimes, well most of the time, and my doc doesn't say a thing. I don't want to get off it though either until preg maybe.. sometimes i think about stopping but really would rather not yet.. While it would make sense to stop immediately if your TTC intentionally, for me the advantages of taking seem to outweigh just stopping.. if that makes sense. I'd stop for pregnancy though.

And yes, to the person who posted about the weight gain when you don't take it, no fun LoL

my OB/GYN said it was okay to keep taking the adderall while i was TTC, since it really helps me. i doubt your miscarriage had anything to do with the adderall. from what i've read and researched about it, it has more of an effect later in pregnancy than early on.

well, im 34 wks pregnant. up until 12 wks, took 60mg adderall xr. then i took only 30mg xr, every day and still do. i dont care if people attack me for it...they arent me and dont know me. my son is doing wonderul and even ahead on growth

I took Dextrostat for 2&half months, which is similar to Adderall. I was unaware I was pregnant.. I asked my doctor& she said my baby will be find.. she didn't seem overly concerned at all, thankgosh!

Hi, I have been studying online and keep seeing the same things. It is a class C and tested on much smaller animals with a much higher dose. I have also read that many people have taken it and the babies have been fine. I have been searching for an answer that would help me and found none. I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and still have not gone in for my first appointment yet. I go in this Tuesday and I am hoping to see that everything is fine. I never completely stopped taking my adderall when I found out I was pregnant, but I did lower my dosage from 30 mg to 10-15 mg. My husband is totally against me taking it while pregnant but I cannot function all the time with out it and get depressed and feel totally miserable so I take it when I feel I need to, I feel alot better when I do take it and sometimes I feel that is better than being totally miserable and stressed with out it. I will send an update when I go in tuesday and let everybody know how the baby is developing....I am quite nervous but not so much because of the adderall but because I recently had a miscarriage the first time we conceived. I do know that some docs say no and others say yes....its so confusing and I feel all of your pain!

From what Ive seen as a nurse most dr.s say its fine in the first trimester of pregnancy. There are other safer alternatives that can be substituted, they may not work as well but sometimes they do the trick depending on the severity of the pt.

I am in the same boat. JUST found out I was pregnant. I take 20mg adderall xr daily for my add and ocd- as well as 20mg celexa a day. My pcp told me to stop immediatly. I called an ob to schedule and ask what they think I should do but no call back. I do NOT want to do anything to hurt my baby- But I also feel like ripping myself off of these two meds is going to cause so much stress for my body. They are both class C- but stress this early on could have horrible effects as well! If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it!
