Most of the time they won't let you upgrade before your renewal date, or you may have to pay the retail price of the phone.

Do you have to be eligible for an upgrade though? I want the Droid Incredible, but I just got a phone like 7 months ago

Nope, you can buy a verizon phone like on here, or ebay, etc and just switch them and it won't mess with your contract at all. I did it with my last phone it died at work and I had another verizon phone in my car and jumped online and put the ESN in there and BAM it's was activated.

I upgraded and renewed my contract like 5 months early, they let me.

It didnt happen for me, I did it online and it let me, but I had a question so we called Customer Service and the guy completed it for me, and it was like 5 or so months early, my new contract date is now for that date.

But I renewed with Verizon for another 2 yr contract I think, so I probably still have to wait.
