Gestational Diabetes -Blood Glucose Monitoring Question

posted 7th Oct '07
The obgyn said I was "borderline" gestational diabetes. I had to go get the expensive blood monitor, the test strips, etc etc. Then I went on vacation for a month and came back to see the dr at the appt. She wanted to see my monitor to prove I was actually testing my blood sugar 4 times a day. I didn't bring the monitor, and I badly lied about testing. She totally knew I hadn't been testing regularly.
It's not that I wasn't testing at all, I was more or less watching my diet and taking the blood sugar meds she prescribed that keep my blood sugar around 100 all the time. I was so busy, I just didn't do it.. and my obgyn reamed me up and down about it with all sorts of comments on how I don't care about my baby's health.
I do care, I just disagree with testing 4 times a day.
My current problem? I have an appointment with the obgyn again on the 15th. I HAVE to bring the monitor with me now. Of course, I still haven't managed to test my blood sugar 4 times a day, everytime I do, it's so normal, it's ridiculous.
I normally follow rules like crazy but I've become cranky and defiant in my pregnancy... any ideas on how to fudge the monitor to show I'm testing more?

By the way, please don't reply with negative comments on how I don't care about my baby and how I should take all of this more serious. I know and I have. I'm not smoking, drinking, tanning, doing anything else that is putting baby in danger. I'm just hating testing my blood sugar several times a day, every day. My dr already made me feel like crap, I come to this message board for ideas, support, or comiseration. Thanks in advance guys.

I dont know how to fudge the monitor to make it look like you have been testing... Of course, I didn't even know the monitor kept track   If you're only borderline, I don't understand why the doc just doesn't tell you to stick to a certain diet.. I thought you only had to test if you -had- gd. I'm not a doc though, so what do I know I guess. Good luck!! Try not to get stressed by your mean doc.

Thanks for the reply. I actually spent a lot of time looking into it online and in my booklet that came with the tester. Even after removing the batteries, the darn thing STILL shows the memory. Argh. Too bad the testers are so expensive or I'd just go buy a new one.

I'm now seeing if I can change the date and time and test several times today to show readings as if they have been from the past week.

Of course, my reading this morning was 75.. completely normal. Makes this whole faking results even more irritating. I would feel so much guiltier if I actually had high blood sugar, which I know I do not.

Thanks for the support!

Sorry sweetie....there are no ways to fudge the monitor. It only tells what it knows. Use to be simpler back in the day.....they didn't keep track....you did in a note book. While yes you should be following dr's orders, I can see where you are coming from. It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things. Here are your options.....

#1. You can either comply with dr's orders and continue to monitor your blood sugar until the 15th, 4 times a day......

-OR-

#2. Only do it 2 maybe 3 times a day, and try to rationalize with her and get her to see your persepective on things.

What ever you do.....good luck. However, please keep all this in mind. Your dr can decide that you are being difficult / problem patient, and "not taking your pregnancy / your baby's health seriously" and opt to not want to see you anymore, or recommend you see another dr. If you dr. is being that much of a GYNzilla to you........you may wish to pick another dr. anyway. No one should be treated like an asshole by their dr.

I say just show her the monitor. She'll see for herself that your tests have been normal, even if they aren't taken 4 times a day!

I'd look into other doctors too. It seems ridiculous that you'd still have to be testing 4 times daily if everything is normal and you are just"borderline".

I agree, don't worry about stressing over the monitor. You can 't change it. I would ask for a new doctor. Tell the advice nurse what your problem is and that you don't feel that you can work with this doctor because it is making you so much more stressed which isn't healthy and get them to assign you a new doctor.

i actually have gestational diabetes and since i am keeping my sugars real low with healthy diet, I DONT EVEN HAVE TO TEST 4 TIMES A DAY. I say just be honest with her since you are only borderline and show her that when you do test everything is fine. Maybe even ask her if there is any way your glucose test could have been false? and if she has a problem with you asking that maybe you should get a new dr. or look for a new one next time around. also, if she is that concerned, why doesnt she schedule ultrasounds every 3-4 weeks to check the size of the baby. if baby is growing fine then.....
