HPV Vaccine
posted 7th Oct '07
Hi all,
My daughter brought home info on this vaccine along with parents consent letter in order for her to receive the vaccine at school. I signed the consent and she is supposed to have the first dose at school on Friday. My friend came over for a visit last night ( her daughter goes to the same school as mine and they are in the same class and hang out together as well, they are both 13). She said she is uneasy about the vaccine and is not signing for her daughter to receive it as she said she has heard some bad things about the vaccine and is going to wait five years until she allows her daughter to receive it. That would make the daughter 18 . I told her that I dunno what she was doing at 18 but when I was 18 I was already having sex, and I think that I would rather my daughter receive the vaccine now, as she is not sexually active. I would be interested in hearing your comments, and to those of you that have gotten the vaccine, did you have any reactions etc.
Thanks everyone!!
p.s. this vaccine is offered free through the school system, and is done in three different doses through out the school year. If I choose not to have my daughter done during the school year, I will have to pay 500.00 per dose to have her done later on when she is older.

I think if they are offering it at school then you should get it. personally I wish they had the vaccine when i was a teenager..I have HPV now so it would have been nice to be vaccinated with it when i was younger.
it sounds to me like you already have your mind made up about it for her to have it...don't let one persons negative thoughts change your mind... It's a personal decision and as a mom you need to make that decision for your daughter. only you can make that decision.

I like the fact that they're offering it at your daughter's school.
If I had a daughter, I'd definately get her vaccinated.

I have a friend who was vaccinated. She had no reactions to it.

Arika, my 13 year old will be getting her 2nd dose this coming Friday.
If only they had this vaccine when I was young- I wouldn't have cancer now and having a hysterectomy.
Did you also know there is apparently research showing it is also transmitted digitally? (fingers) Our doctor informed me of this at Arika's first appointment.

I would definitely have my daughter vaccinated. But, I can see the point of view of a Mom who is hesitant. It is a hard decision to make but why not protect them all we can?

I agree w/you. At 18 you never know what is going on w/them. Why not protect them now.

why would the lady wait til her daughter is 18? what kind of difference is that gonna make? i have been thinking about getting them after i have my baby, if insurance covers it. just because i dont have it now, and i hope i stay with my bf, there are no guarantees, and before i know it i'll be too old to get it done, and what if i end up with a different guy later in life and get it. i would get it done for her now. especially since the school is paying for it.

I had just finished my vaccination right before I found out I was pregnant. I didn't have any kind of reactions. I wish they would have offered it to us when I was in school, my shots were $230 a pop.
If mine ends up being a girl, and they offer it I would most definately go fo rit.

youre making the right choice. and if your daughter does decide to have sex, even with a condom, they arent as effevtive at preventing hpv as they are with other stds. so i think its a great idea.
i got my first shot in february and had to stop because i found out i was pregnant. i had the first one unknowingly while i was pregnant and didnt have any reactions. im going to continue my vaccines after i have the baby.
