What actually happens when Someone is being INDUCED???

posted 4th Oct '07
Okay, i only have like 6 more days until my duedate and the doc said that if i don't have my baby by next thursday which is my next appointment, then he's gonna send me to the hospital, but didn't tell me for what and I forgot to ask for what. So I'm just wondering What happens during an induction, anyone who's been induced before feel free to tell me about all the details, I won't be that disgusted, as what the doc said "sending me to the hospital" might be for an induction or striping of membranes... So I want to know of all the details before it happen so that I won't have to be sooo nervous where i have no clue what goes on.

**BTW: Is induction & stripping or the membranes the same or different?

Have you watched A Baby Story on TLC, its as real as it gets. In fact my Dr's ofc reccomends it above any other labor show, T.V. is never real. And no they are not the same. Stripping of membranes is just where they go in and do just what it says and it hurts alot then you go home and hopefully start labor soon. Induction you stay in the hospital they put a hormone called cervadil inside your vagina up by your cervix, this causes you to thin and dialate overnight usually, sometimes they have to do it twice. But you have to be under constant supervision with an induction. Then depending on how you do they could also use patocin to make your contractions stronger and more regular. Basically one intervention can lead to another, I know I had a c-section when my water broke before labor started good with my first, so I was forced to go to the hospital earlier but didn't progress...oh and they will probably break your water once you have dialted to 4 or 5 cm. My sister had this done her baby was born three hours later. Just make sure you feel really comfortable with who is recommending what, and only do what you want to do. A healthy mom and baby is whats most important. Good luck!

When I was pregant with my first son I wasn't thinning out or dilating at all so my doctor had me wait until I was 41 wks by sonogram due date and then he had me go into the hospital at around 8:30pm on Feb. 12, 2006 and they gave me the stuff the above post talks about cervadil....

my doctor placed that by my cervix and they put a belly montor on me for about a hour and then told me to get some rest............ this next part may be TMI but I will tell you anyways..... at almost 2am I told my husband I thought I had to poop haha and asked him if he thought it would be ok if I went since I didn't want that medication to fall out (trust me it won't fall out) well I when to the bathroom and I started bleeding.............. let me tell you that was soooooo scary because for 9 months you don't bleed and then theres blood and it's like what is going on!!!!!

Well I had my husband get the nurse and she came in and told me it was normal and I walked over to wash my hands and I started having my contractions..... they put me on a montor again for a few minutes just to see how the contraction were coming and they were right on top of each other so they took out the cervadil and
They checked me and I was already fully thined out and 3 cm dilated.... I asked if I could walk the hall and they said that was fine so my husband and I walked for about 30 minutes and then I asked if I could use their hot tub......... (shower works good too) well they checked me again and I was already a good 4 and they put me in the hot tub..... I was in there for about a hour or so and then I got out and they checked me again...... while I was in there I could feel fluid coming out I still say it was my water breaking but we couldn't tell........ I was at 6cm at this point and they moved me into the delievey room..... they call my doctor and when he checked me I was already at a 7 almost 8cm dilated. My parents and sister showed up and they let them in the room I had 3 more contractions and then I was ready to push.. so I kicked everyone out but my husband and the doctor came back and check and I was fully dilated and I pushed for about a half out and my son was born. For me the pushing was the hardest part!!!My son had his hand up by his head so I had to push both out at the same time.

Over all my labor and deliever was 5 hours from when I started feeling contractions till I had my son at 7:07am. I have heard alot of good things about cervadil but pitoson it seems like alot of people end up having a C Section. I think being induced like that was the best thing ever I was already at the hospital when everything started!!!   Good Luck and if they do give you the Cervadil just relax.... alot of people ask me how I managed to go without any meds. when my contractions were so close and I tell them I just would think of relaxing my cervix and picturing it opening up for the baby to come out.   Good Luck!!!!

My son was a week late he was supposed to be due Sept 11th and I got induced on that Monday night Sept 17th and had him on Sept 18th.
I thought being induced was going to be scary but it was a piece of cake!
I was only dialated 1cm so Monday night they put this cervadil in me and the next morning they were supposed to induce me at 7am. Tuesday morning came and by 7am I was only dialated at 2cm. I thought here we go its going to be a long day.
By 8am they started the PT the doctor came in at 9:30am and broke my water (didn't hurt at all). To find out that he had a bowel movement inside of me which then they had to flush it out (now that hurt) then by 10:30am I had my epidural (God bless epidurals) by 12:30pm I was complete and ready to push. Only to wait an 1hr and half for my doctor to come. He finally came at 2:52pm and delivery was excellent.

My advice to you is to don't be scared everything will work out!
GOOD LUCK
