Eczema

posted 4th Oct '07
Does anyone have a child with eczema? My daughter is almost two and around her first birthday she started to get a spot of eczema on her arm right in the crease on the opposite side of the elbow. We have been putting some over the counter eczema lotion on her arm ever since and it seemed like it was doing fine. I mean at the most as long as we put the lotion on once(if it doesnt look bad) ora few times a day(if its looking bad) it was fine and she barely had much there it was just a slightly pink color and looked a little dry. But now all of the sudden in the past month it has been bright pink and really bad looking. My hubby and I feel so bad for her.

So my question is do we cover it up or let air to it? And is there any type of lotion or remedy that seemed to work good for your children? Should I take her to the doctor and get a perscription? We wont have medical coverage for another three months so if there is something I can do over the counter til' then it would be great.

Thank you for anyone who help's ahead of time.

let it air out when you cover it up it gets hot and irritated my sons is worse in the summer then the winter months bc of the heat. we went to the allergy dr and they gave him some cream locoildol [[not sure about spelling]] and some zyrtec and every night before he goes to bed we give him 5ml of benedrly and 5ml of zyrtec it helps him not scratch at night [[drs orders]] so you may wanna take her to the dr when you have a chance bc eczema is a sign of an allergy it may be food or cats/dog. my son is allergic to peanuts so we have an epi pen so if he comes in contact with peanut we have to give him a shot so he dosent swell up and cant breath so its kinda serious you need to take her and have an allergy test done. hope any of this helped any other questions lemme know

oh and my son also gets it in his creases of his arms and behinds the knees and of the top of his foot and his wrist thoose are the most common places and sometimes you will see it on the back and belly and there eyes may get red and puffy underneath

Yes. Thank you. We get medical in 3 months so I plan on taking her to the doctors then and getting referd to a specialist. In the meantime I am changing her laundry detergent and puting eczema lotion on it 3 times a day to see if it helps any. If it starts to get any worse before dec-jan when our medical kicks in then I will take her in anyways and just pay for it ourself.

my step daughter has it and she too gets it in the creases in her elbows and behind the knees. Her mom took her to the dermatologist and they told her detergents, lotions, and soaps with fragrance in the can irritate the problem.

My daughter had it on her diaper area for months.. on the insides of her inner thighs and on her butt and lower back. I took her to the doctor, and the asshole said to put hydrocortisone cream on it.... it didn't do ANYTHING! Since it's the opposite of diaper rash you're supposed to give it moisture to go away because its made up of dried out skin... So I baught some Gentle Naturals Baby eczema cream and used it at every diaper change, it helped a lot... I also baught Aveeno creamy moisturizing wash (it says on the bottle it helps w/ eczema) and the cream that goes with it (basically the same as the gentle naturals) and after using the aveeno it's completely gone away... I have no idea what caused it, but my doctor was an asshole and I had to figure it out on my own, him telling me to use anti itch cream just didn't cut it.

I come from a family of very atopic people ....meaning eczema and psoriosis (sp)  run rampant ... Very nearly everyone has it to some degree , I for instance only break out when i consume too much citrus or when i am pregnant ...This time around i had it in my groin and armpit area ...My son Jacob is 2 and a half and has had a patch somewhere on his body since he was 2 weeks old .I can get rid of it but never completely for some reason . Mind you  Jacob has an allergy/astmna component to his skin troubles and we are just starting to isolate his food allergies (so far we have only added sesame to the list which is good but im dreading when we have to try peanuts and fish) He has very sensitive skin so he is on a daily regimen of  glaxal base cream with a little bit of vaseline... and we use the hydrocortisone cream but I find that using too much of that seems to cause resistance so I dont really like to use it too much. Our use goes up drastically in the winter months mind you .My friend once told me that when he daughter got a patch on her torso her aunt suggested penaten cream ....it comes in a small round flat tin and  its got a blue label... she said it worked wonders....unfortunately Jacob didnt respond to it but I think its because he has it on about 30% of his body...Oh and what I have learned also along the lines of detergents is that the ones with lemon scent tend to have citrus in them and excess of citrus can cause breakouts ...in my kids it does lol. Just something to think about. I have to use baby detergent on Jacobs clothing and bedding because most otheres are too strong for his skin , i think he is a drastic case tho and there are other factors in his skin troubles... but give the penaten a try , it doesnt have the steroid like hydrocortisone ... and incidentally if the rash is strong then she may have needed a stronger % of the steroid. Jacob responds only to 2.5% hydrocortisone as opposed to the 1% ...that doesnt touch him anymore.

My daughter has had it since she was born pretty much...I had to use Pampers sensitive diapers and wipes, and I use Aveeno everything...especially their oatmeal baths it really helps. Then the doctor prescribed her some kind of steroid cream, but said to only use it when the skin is really bad. I feel so bad for my daughter, she is almost 3 now and still hasn't grown out of it.

Does she have asthma also? Just wondering because Jacob has seasonal asthma with a cough variant and im told they go hand in hand ... Jacob was about 2 weeks old and he broke out all over his face and i was told it was baby acne ...it never went away till i got medication for it, then was diagnosed with eczema ( around 2 months old)
