SCIATICA.......HELP!!!

posted 4th Oct '07
I'm 32 weeks and dealing with disc and nerve compression. My leg keeps going numb and wants to give out. I get the worst sharp pains in the lower right of my pelvis (it's like someone is stabbing me with a knife and twisting it) I was up for 24 hours because the pain was so bad. The Doctor said there isn't much they can do and to try and wear a maternity belt. I did buy one and it helps tremendously but as soon as I take it off it's back to square one. The only time I take it off is to shower but when I do the pain if horrific! Anybody else have this kind of pain? If so, is there anything else that may help. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I had that with my second pregnancy and I saw a chiropractor. I am having sciatic nerve problems again this pregnancy (and I am only 19 weeks along), my dr. said I can see a chiropractor again or he would recommend physical therapy. Talk to your dr. S/he can recommend either or for you....and give you a referral. Good luck.

Wow, you just described exactly what has been going on with me! I am so glad that it's ''normal''... even though it still sucks alot.

What I do is put pillows all around me on the floor to support my weight, keeping it off my tummy. Then I make my hubby slowly push down harder and harder on my butt. Sometimes I can get a little pop (which is utter exstacy... even just for a moment.) and I am good for about an hour or so. At least good enough to get me to sleep. If it doesn't pop then it feels alright for about 10-15 minutes.

I also lay flat on the floor with my knees up and then slowly lower them. That tends to pull apart those pesky squished parts and is very relieving for awhile.

Do you have spinal bifida occulta?? Cuz I have that and I thought that might be alot of my problem. If you dont, that would be very reassuring for me to know its just normal pain.

I've been using heat packs and warm baths/showers to help relieve mine a little. I haven't got the maternity belt yet, but what I've been doing is helping so far.

No I don't have the spinal bifida but I did have a back injury some years ago that left me with 3 disc buldges. I have disc buldges at L-3, L-4, and L-5. I did some research on the internet and found that there is a femoral nerve that originates in this area. I asked my Doctor if this could be the reason my problem is so bad but he said, "Well it could be related or it could just be that you were going to get this anyway."

It's so frustrating. I'm usually very active and it's really hard to not be. I even had to go off of work a little earlier than I wanted to. I kept getting the pain when I was at work........sometimes when I was with patients and I had to keep excusing myself. It was THAT BAD! I'm going to try some of your suggestions.

Thanks again............just know that you're NOT alone!

I thought I was the only one going through it this early. My leg feels like it is going to give out on me from the pain! What to Expcect doesn't cover it until 7 months and I am not that far yet. I have been doing tailor stretches to try to keep my pelvis loose but it still acts up sometimes.
