Nipple rings and breastfeeding

posted 27th Sep '07
Yes, I know this is a weird topic, but I'm hoping someone can help answer this.
No, I don't have nipples pierced now, but I did when I was younger. Everyone who is about as far along as me (29 weeks) seems to be getting leaky boobs, but I haven't. Also, my boobs have gotten a little bigger but not swollen like again everyone else seems to be. When I orginally pierced them, they said it wouldn't interfere with my breastfeeding later in life, but now I'm worried that I may have done something stupid that will impede on my ability to lactate.

Has anyone out there had their nipples pierced before and were you able to produce milk?

Thanks

I heard from one source that she actually had a faster milk flow because of the extra holes in her nipple... but that could be bullsh*t.
Otherwise, I dunno.
I'm too chicken to get any sensitive parts pierced. I stick with ears and facial.

Thanks, guess I'll just wait and see. Nothing I can do about it now anyway.

I obviouslly couldn't tell you about producing milk seeing as my son isn't born and it wont come in till after then. But I have had my nipples pierced for 5 years(I took them out around 27 weeks) and I've been leaking and producing colostrum without a problem. My dctr had noticed them during an exam and suggested I remove them, but said there shouldn't be a problem breast feeding.

Contrary to popular belief, nipple rings do not interfere with breast feeding. I'm 36 wks, have leaky boobs and my nipples are pierced. My doctor and midwives told me that I don't have to take them out, its a matter of personal comfort but they did recommend that I take them out each time you feed the baby. A couple of midwives actually told me its just a couple extra holes to leak out of... I'm beginning to think she was right haha.

I've actually read articles about women having their nipples pierced to make nipples protrude to assist in breast feeding..

oh and I didnt start leaking until about 32-33 wks so I think you're fine.

The quick answer: NO, it does not intefere at all!
I had mine pierced for almost 5 years b4 my first daughter was born. I took them out around 30 weeks and never bothered to put them back in because I nursed for over a year and you cant TIME a nursing baby.
They dont really feed on a schedule so much as a bottle fed baby. I would have been taking them out all fast and putting them back in - all day and all night. Waaaay too much hassle for a new mom whose tired as it is. And when u breastfeed your nipples get SORE sometimes...I once thought they were gonna fall right off. So putting my nipple rings back into those swollen sore nipples? HELL NO!!
As for the holes...lets just say it was COMEDY! I used to make my sister die laughing cuz if I squeezed milk out it would come out side holes that obviously were not supposed to be there!
My current prediciment: I have a hood piercing that has to be taken out b4 my c section...and getting that bad boy back in after surgery is NOT gonna be fun!

Thanks ladies-
I feel a lot better now. Guess I'm just lucky that I don't need to deal with leaky boobs yet. I'm sure my day will come soon.

I'm 32 weeks pregos and my boobs just started leaking within the last 4 weeks. I took my nipple rings out around 9 weeks just because I thought the holes might close up faster. My doctor told me I HAD to take them out, but I wish I had researched that before I did it! However, it does seem like a big deal to have to take them out & put them back in to nurse, so it's probably for the best.

I think your "lack of leaking" is just a body thing, not a nipple pierced thing! LOL

This is very true. Sorry to be butting in but I am very passionate about breastfeeding. I breastfed my twins for 10.5 months. I am also a breastfeeding peer counselor and have come across this topic quite a few times and the above statements are true. You dont have to take the piercing out except when you are nursing, for safety issues and also to prevent any infections that are on the jewlry. Goodluck and dont be afraid to ask for help or ask questions!!
