Dogs and Babies

posted 24th Sep '07
I'm a first time mom due in December. We have 3 dogs--all inside. A pomeranian, and 2 mutts (Rottweiler mixes). They're all releatively young--about 2 years. What are good things to try to teach them before the baby gets here?

Make sure you establish dominance with all of them so you are the undisputed leader.
Make boundaries for the dogs around the baby's things, so they dont go to close
Always supervise your dogs with your child, they dont understand each other
Its normal for dominant breeds (rottweilers, german shepherds,) to challenge you for leadership but if you assert your dominance daily they will fall into a healthy routine.
Rules, boundaries, and limitations, make sure these are in place with your dogs before and after baby is here

Have your dog's been socialized or around any babys or young children? It's always a good thing to make sure you know how they are going to react when the baby screams and crys. We have two dog's(both outside) and they are great with my almost 2 year old daughter. The first we got when she was 4 month's old and tought him not to paw or play bite. Those were the two main concerns. The second we got alittle after she was a year. They are both fairly large dogs weighing about 150lbs each. They are st.bernard(i have no clue how to spell that) and Alaskan malimute mix. They are serioulsy big loveable teddy bears. My daughter jumps all over them and pulls on their lips while they are eating and they dont care they just go about their business. Another thing you might want to do is while they are eating put your hands in their food dish.. take their food away and give it back pull and tugg on their ears and face and just mess with them alot while they are eating to make sure they are not going to snap at your baby when he/she is old enough to wabble their way over to the feeding area. Our dogs can be eating a steak and are still okay with my daughter messing with them and the food. We also taught her to feed them meat(steak ect.) and them to take it gently from her. They have never bitten , growled or snarled at her. They do occasionally knock her down with their big butts though but that is just something to happen with a big dog. She has never been hurt by it though. Good luck and sorry I rambled on a novel.
